Class of 2020 USNA Appointment Thread

Ignore the kid running his mouth. Unless he has an appointment in hand, it's just talk. Not very honorable is probably a stretch, it's just a kid who is cocky and needs to learn a lesson about humility. Humility is a huge trait as an officer. If he is appointed he will learn it within 15 minutes of I Day. There are still appointments, if you weren't in the running you would have a TWE. They are moving things around and racking and stacking things such as the NWL. Hang in there and secure the back up plans. Heck a lot of universities are just now releasing regular decisions, USNA is in line with that.

What Is NWL and what does it mean?

If you are wait listed what does that mean?is there a number that is included ie what number are you?

Do you just proceed with plan b?

Naps: if you go through Naps is that mean you can go to Academy?

If you are strong academically already do they still send you to naps for other reasons?

I agree. My son hasn't gotten rejected yet, but many, many have. So how is that bad? My thought is, if nothing else, he was 2nd or 3rd in our district & our district isn't filled yet. I think I saw on here that an Offer went out to someone in our district, but it wasn't accepted yet. So I'm thinking if it's not, they've kept my son alive as an option? Maybe I'm in denial? He has an Appointment at USMMA. So Plan B is secure, but this is still stressful cause he has to get a Medical Waiver if he gets in to USNA & has to accept MMA by 5/1.

National Waiting List - lots of info about this and how it works in the Nom section. Essentially anyone with a Nom who doesn't win a slate goes to the NWL. Details are there on how at a minimum 150 folks come from that list. Many more than 150 do, but that is the minimu. The Nom section details how the 150 and beyond are determined and how it all works.

Wait list - USNA will inform candidates if they are on the wait list. As far as I know and remember, no USNA does not provide that number. It's small the number they keep on this list.

NAPS - USNA can send folks there for a variety reasons. Bottom line a quality candidate who needs some academic prep work are the majority of reasons. Strong academics is a relative term. A 4.0 student, 1 in their class might be strong in that regard, but not by USNA standards if they went to a school that maybe didn't offer Calc or even Pre-Calc. A candidate who completes NAPS successfully will get into USNA.

Plan B - yes, until appointment in hand, pursue every option.

What is difficult is securing plan b for my DS. He has been accepted to several excellent universities. But we would need to visit these schools before making a decision and my DS is just not interested. We visited the yard last year and that finalized his decision for usna.

He did not apply to usma or usafa or usmma as his passion is to be a navy officer and study engineering. Fingers crossed!

The waiting is horrible. At this point I would rather have the truth. Update the portal, send the TWE or the email. But why continue to drag it out if the applicant has washed out of the selection process. Our DS attended a nomination dinner in December where an applicant from our District made it clear to everyone who could hear that his/her appointment was secured. Disappointing. :( and frankly, not very honorable.

Patience, you really need to exercise that virtue. The truth is your DS is still in the running! I remember a post on the forum that a magnet high school in NOVA has SEVEN students appointed in the same year! I doubt they were offered their appointments in the fall at the same time! At the end they all became plebes and the order of offer or acceptance does not matter.

Hang in there!

usnaDad, I strongly recommend picking one after visiting them or make a choice and go visit, to make IT your DS's plan b.

If he is dead set on USNA, you have more reasons to help him position himself to relaunch as a college reapplicant in the case he is turned down this year, from a school that he likes and picked.

Best of luck!

Not likely, I am afraid. Most of the offers of Appointment for the Class of 2020 are ‘out on the table’. (USAFA just had its big release last week)

FWIW, (reading thru the past years of threads), it looks like the Foundation/NAP offers have been going out for the Class of 2021 + various waiver holds + some of the better USNA Club Sports that have a little pull are getting their requested Class of 2020 recruits. Going forward for this 2020 Appointment thread, we could see 8-15 more listed (being optimistic) as USNA Admissions fills in the rest of the Class of 2020 with slots vacated by the kids that are turning-down offered 2020 Appointments .

I have heard there a couple of MOC picks in Northern OH that have not had any action, but that's just my own antidotal info learned over the weekend.
In regards to your northern Ohio coment, could you elaborate?

Last year's waitlist letters went out and were dated April 1st to give you an idea of timing for class of 2019. Some estimate there are about 100 kids chosen for the waitlist. The letters stated "1300 appointment have gone out and they expected 1165 to accept." I don't think anyone on this forum got off the waitlist ( TWE arrived sometime in May) however there are quite a few re-applicants who got appointments this year.

USNA constantly adjusts the number of appointments given to target a class size driven by many factors... Budget, attrition rates, target set by govt, etc. Attrition rates in general are much lower than years before. It was around 25%-30% when I was there, it's much lower now. USNA has adjusted their number of appointments because of lower attrition. Also USNA uses past data to figure out how many appointments to offer and how many they anticipate to accept. Like a lot of this stuff it's part art and science.

I can't honestly remember anyone getting off the wait list the last few years. As always, best to have a Plan B.

USNA2020dad, understand your DS isn't interested but honestly he needs to look. I am sure you have encouraged it. Tell him to remember an officer prepares for all options and outcomes. He needs to learn the 7 Ps... Prior Proper Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance.

Upon deep reflection, it was clear that when I posted here yesterday, I did come off as a know-it-all smugster or a horses-ass.

I sincerely apologize to the Board and to NavyHoops in particular, for my insensitive behavior.

I truly meant no harm with my analysis; I was only trying to lay out some thoughts. Message delivery has never been one of my better talents.

I truly do understand the feeling of receiving a TWE and perhaps the years since getting that letter have dulled within me the ability to reflect upon what it will be like in this day and age to get one.
Years ago, I remember not even saying anything to my family, especially to my Dad who as a USNA grad and recognized athlete. At that time, I felt certain he had enough pull to help get me in. Of course he did not.

Today, when an email TWE ‘explodes’ in the middle of a HS English class for a kid; how could he/she not be taken by surprise? I fprgot that unlike my experience, that kid has nowhere to retreat and digest news that will affect ‘the roads’ one chooses for the rest of their life.

I have no excuse to offer. Going forward, I will strive to consider what I am about to post here with more forethought before I hit ‘send’.

USNA2020Dad, As I read your post I was so reminded of where we were last year. We too were a USNA only family. All of these wonderful, bright applicants have usually not had things not go well for them, and that's where we were last year. But I want to amend that and say that's where we still are. You see, even though we had to drag DS to his Plan E school, it was a blessing in disguise. I'm sure the second-timers will agree with me. It boosted his confidence up from feeling defeated last year after a June TWE, gave him that growing-up period that all freshman have to do to become self sufficient with their time/habits, and he has lifelong friends and memories of another life experience to take with him always. Honestly, it has made a BFE much sweeter for this hard-working boy who I think deserves it. Fortunately, he was home on spring break when he got the news. Before going back he told me how lucky he felt to have had a year to experience separation from home, tackle calculus and chem, make great friends, and manage time, while never giving up on his USNA dream. Life won't always give him Plan A, so he learned to deal with it. Your quote in another thread saying, "' the right school for your son is out there... your son will do extremely well and will always cherish the college experience'" I find to be a good attitude for all. TWE or BFE, we take what life gives, make the best of it, and plan accordingly. As for our family, we see God's hand more clearly now in Plan E for DS last year to Plan A for now. He will have the best of both worlds. A great year of civilian college to remember plus USNA as well! I hope your child gets the BFE, and I know what a toll the preparation and waiting takes on everyone. But if he should not receive it this time, may your family realize what your counselor said, the right school is out there. For us we just didn't realize that the Plan E was going to be part of the journey. Many hopes for the BFE for everyone who worked so hard!!!!!

Ds was one of those people and received an appointment this year. He worked very hard this year to prove himself and we are all grateful for the extra year now that it is behind us... Not so much this time last year...

Mom529, I got chillbumps reading your post. That sums up our experience as well.

murf, no worries. If I thought they were out of bounds I would of locked things down or sent you a PM. I try to realize parents and kids are stressed this time of year. Some folks will look for any indication of what things mean when 99% of the time it means nothing. Folks don't try to read into things. Remember stats can be made to look like anything if you want them to or are only working with half the story. Honestly just let the process play out. The application process is a mystery to many, but it honestly hasn't changed in decades. Its the same one I did many moons ago. Good luck to all those waiting and to those who have received appointments, work hard, have fun and enjoy the ride. For those who have gotten the TWE, if a commission is what you want, there are many roads there. If USNA is the path for you, reapply. Many second timers get in. My room mate one year at USNA was a third timer. The year of 'real college' is a great chance to experience a normal college, join a frat, mature, grow, make friends. It could only help you tackle USNA that much better.

Numbers-wise, last year USNA was targeting a class size of 1132. They had the highest acceptance rate yet and had ~1190 candidates on I-day.

Even if he isn't passionate about any of the choices physically going and seeing/touring them will help rank them as back ups. Some he will like others he will rule out. It really does help. What he likes/doesn't like could change just like physically being at the yard sealed the deal for him being there is a different perspective than images or info on paper. Everyone will feel better about the uncertainty having a plan. Pick the top few that make sense to visit and go. We visited several with both my future mid and his older mid sib including out of state. They were actually very fun trips.

Ignore the kid running his mouth. Unless he has an appointment in hand, it's just talk. Not very honorable is probably a stretch, it's just a kid who is cocky and needs to learn a lesson about humility. Humility is a huge trait as an officer. Heck a lot of universities are just now releasing regular decisions, USNA is in line with that.

Thanks for the ongoing encouragement, "NavyHoops." I'm a lot more stressed for my DS than I was for myself. I was offered the NAPS route for football and definitely needed the extra year, physically and mentally. I'd love for my son to go there, but he actually has an amazing resume to get directly in. Still in the running now and waiting. He's got the NROTC 4 yr and accepted to Auburn so far. Vanderbilt just notified him that they will be going out with acceptance notices tomorrow and UVa is April 1, so USNA is right in the time-frame mix. I think it's just the rolling admissions issue that puts everyone on edge versus other colleges.

I know I'm biased, but with my brother and I both being grads, I had hoped USNA would give more weight to legacy applicants (all else being equal). I read an article yesterday that legacy acceptance at Notre Dame is 24%, whereas USNA is under 5%. It shouldn't be a gimmee, but ever since my son has been around all the reunions in Annapolis and attended STEM after 8th grade, he has built a resume of leadership, grades, athletics, overseas missions work, etc. that is impeccable. Even the regional guidance LT at USNA commented, when we stopped in his Junior Year, before the Army-Navy game in Baltimore that everything he had done was what the Academy is looking for. Obviously I'm quite proud of him besides the laundry list of Class President, Eagle Scout, 3 Varsity Sports, great ACT, AP Calc, yada yada that everyone rattles off, he is the only applicant in the U.S. that completed the 2 week Special Warfare SEAL Training in Panama City Beach, last year. Only 10 were accepted to this training and 8 finished and received their Trident (authorized by the Navy SEALs). Every nomination board was impressed with him in his Summer Whites and asked him about it. Then you throw in the legacy issue and you'd think it would be a no-brainer. Even a 4 star and 1 star graduate who know him well, wrote letters about his impeccable character and other personal issues. So.... we wait :)

I found out recently that our MOC's appointee has declined USNA and taken an appointment from USMA. What happens to that slot now? Does it go to another nominee from the same MOC?

Our experience: DS received MOC nominations for UNSA, USMA, and USAFA. When MOC office called to notify and congratulate him, they specifically asked him to indicate which Academy he would select so they could offer the unused nominations to other candidates without delay.
