Class of 2020 USNA Appointment Thread

We are in the same boat. The wait is very hard. I have been very tempted to contact someone (BGO or admissions counselor). I am praying for a phone call or portal change soon!

I am new to this process. My son is waiting for word on whether he has received an appointment. I am very anxious also wanting to know if he will be attending an SA or one of his backup plans. Would it be acceptable to contact the admissions counselor to see if his application has been reviewed? The status has shown complete pending review for a long time.

My son is in the same boat and hasn't changed status since November, but everyone just keeps saying to be patient, which is hard. Good luck!

My application was deemed finished and completed in July. I believe it is not appropriate to contact anyone, especially a parent to contact admissions. Am sure all sons and daughters would agree. Good luck to all of us!
I am sure we will start hearing soon. See prior years appointment thread for an approximate time line.

Found out from my DS that someone from our district (CA 42) received an appointment. That means, that his package is added on the national pool pile. Hoping for the best, if not, he will be attending bootcamp at MCRD, San Diego this summer.

2caoile3, just because someone received an appointment from your district doesn't mean that his Nom will be charged to that MOC. They could have a Presidential, VP, Supt, Senator or any of the lesser known noms. Still plenty of appointments to come in the next few weeks. Hang in there and good luck to your DS.

Thank you NavyHoops; my DS is in a similar situation despite being a very strong candidate. I'm loosing hope, and I'm constantly thinking of how to help him with a possible rejection. I think he has helped himself for the possibility from having a wonderful plan B and NROTC Scholarship.

Last year I spoke with my sons BGO the day before we were to tour his Plan B school. He shared with me that a TWE was on its way. About a week or so before the deadline for all candidates to be informed one way or the other. He spoke with me for approx. an hour talking about what options my son had and said we should most definitely encourage him to reapply as he felt he was/is a strong candidate. I was then faced with either telling my son or waiting for the TWE. I sat in my car and cried as I thought of my son realizing his dream as long as I can remember will not play out as planned. I decided to tell him. I am actually getting emotional as I write this, who knew it could still be such a hard thing to discuss. So, I gently told him what was coming in the mail, he was crushed. No words were said . The tour at the university was not quite as lovely as I had hoped. By the way trying to be overly eager about anything at that point is not good. My constant cheerleading techniques were not appreciated. My advice is let the news sink in. Saying "you can reapply" are NOT words of comfort in the early stages of TWE news. His TWE arrived and he took it took his room, my husband and I never saw it. I suspect he stashed it and used it later as motivation. After a few months when the sting was almost gone he volunteered to us that he would reapply to USNA. He is NROTC-MO this year. He has explored several routes to get to a USMC commission. He has assured us that the end result is what he desires, the route to get there may not be what he originally had planned but... Good luck to all the candidates. This is the most difficult part of the application process.

Thank you 2boymom. As we all approach that ultimate TWE/BFE moment, you have pointed out some great things to keep in mind. While we, in our adult minds, know that disappointment serves to motivate, 18 year olds may not see it that way no matter how maturely they have handled the process thus far. These are exceptional kids... but they are still that... kids. Kids on the verge of adulthood who need to take their cues from how we help them work through it. As a way to soften the blow should a TWE appear, we have started moving forward with a Res Life deposit for my DD's accepted NROTC school. I know she is excited about the school and while she has reservations about attending the accepted student get togethers and beginning the process of roommates, room selection, etc, because she doesn't want to all of a sudden decline and move on from newly formed connections. We both know it's all a part of the process and your experience is so helpful. Thank you for sharing... I think that situation is one that we are all wondering how exactly will we react to should it occur.

Thank you for this extremely helpful site! -Really honored that my first post is one acknowledging our daughter's USNA Appointment. The LOA arrived on her actual birthday & she cried tears of joy! Our neighbors were also enlightened of the event since she ran outside & screamed 'Thank you God' at the top of her lungs!

So excited for you and your DD, MilVetSpouseMom! Happy my DS will have a neighbor in the Class of 2020! Do you think our SoFlo kids are ready for the Annapolis winters? LOL

If your DS has an NROTC scholarship, he will still graduate as a Naval Officer! Don't lose hope yet, still many appointments to be made. But the end result is the same no matter which path he takes.
