Cold Wx uniforms

If I have come across as harsh and condescending, I wish to offer my heartfelt apologies. I don't find it amusing to belittle your concerns. I remember having them as the mom of a plebe. I wanted to understand what she was going through and connect with her, to help her through it. She would call and vent and I took the concerns seriously only to ask her about the situation the next time I talked to her and have her tell me that it was nothing. She had only been venting and that allowed her to let it go. But being on the outside, I didn't see that. She finally told me point blank to just let it go because I could never understand what it was like. My role is to let her vent. All of that complaining is venting. Then they can move on and deal with whatever is next. It was a hard thing for me to learn to do. I now commiserate and listen and leave it at that. It saves me a great deal of stress and many new gray hairs.

Understand that well-meaning parents can cause unforeseen consequences on campus. At one point, we had been trying unsuccessfully for months to get the billing address corrected. After multiple attempts through the appropriate offices, my husband, a good Army officer, did what was for him the next logical thing - he moved up the chain of command. The address was fixed. But DD also got an unexpected audience with the Superintendent. We needed to do what we did. But we learned to warn DD before making any contact with KP admin. There are times when parents do have to act. But think carefully before you react. We don't understand all of the circumstances. Our kids don't have the full picture.

I sincerely hope that for most of you the biggest concern remains issuing of cold weather gear. Our experience has been that that concern wouldn't even be noticed as a speed bump on the roller coaster in hindsight. Best of luck to all of you and your mids. I hope you are able to find the support and answers you need on the Facebook page. For me, while the tone of some of those "old-timers" (and possibly myself) may seem a bit harsh at times, there is a lot wisdom in what they have to say, whether it's what I want to hear or not.

This is a great post. The days of parenting your son or daughter are over (but not forgotten, believe me). It's a good time to step back and let them succeed or fail on their own, with your support from a distance when they need it.

Really? No option(s) to obtain a new uniform if one is needed. In four years.......Really?

I (me, myself and I ) have a simple question......well two actually... Not sure how this thread got back to the helicopter pad.

My question(s)...What are the options for a midshipman, at USMMA, when it comes to needing to or wanting to purchase new uniforms and uniform accessories. If the answer is the Ships' Store, are all uniforms and accessories available there?

DS (plebe) was able to buy another ( golden chicken wings, sorry I should know the official name for the pin) pin for his second uniform at the NEX. Now he has one for khakis and one for dress whites. With having to change uniforms many times a day ( from what I hear) it makes things easier. Also he said something about a uniform exchange. He called it the Goodwill for uniforms. He had to get a different size in something and he said you just are lucky to get what you get. :thumb:

Kpengineer, I'll bite.

Oh come on, don't leave us hanging. What are your thoughts on early muster?

This kind of negative attention is wasted on a group. Sometimes it can be useful but only if your intent is really to bond them as a unit. A company wide muster for a dirty deck? I can't imagine that I was the Company Commanders idea as he/she would have had a mutiny of fellow first classism on his hands. I am left with the conclusion that it was the Company Officers idea in which case I would say he doesn't understand his job. He missed out on a chance to teach and mentor his M/N Officers which is his PRIMARY job and not micromanaging the cleanliness of the deck.

You get more flies with honey than vinegar and other than with problem children (10% of your people cause 90% of your problems) simply pointing out the deficiency and reminding them what needed to be done is all that is needed. Definitely not a 0600 muster! I hope it wasn't a school day which would make it even more wrong.

I recommend looking at the NEX website www.mynavyexchange.com if they are getting CACs now then they should be sufficiently in "the system" to be able to order online. Back in my day, before the NEX ran the ships store, the ships store was more expensive than the NEX.

Time for Moms and Dads to back off and let their wee ones grow up.

But, what would I do for a daily smile if it were not for some of the posts from the plebes parents each fall?

OK, maybe being a bit "harsh" here, but it is amusing to some of us more "old timer types"

yah, harsh and condescending.
CW2, sent you a private message... check out the parent facebook page... it's a much nicer crowd... and they actually find out the answers to the questions rather than just ***** at you and make fun of you.

Funny! Facebook is great for those looking to have everyone agree with them. That always helps. If you want to let your mids grow up and handle these things as an adult hang around and get some feedback from the "less nice, but honest and realistic crowd". HeHe.

As I recall, wasn't that largely a function of who was operating the Ship's Store?

That is my belief. Same people who ran the bookstore which was an even bigger boondogle for them. Definitely waste and abuse and borderline fraud if you ask me.

Did you ever actually look at your bookstore receipt? As if the prices weren't outrageous enough, factor in what they were paying M/N to buy back books and that we pay full price for that same used book as a new one and it is borderline criminal.

A friend of mine found an outside source that was paying more to buy books than the bookstore. They shut him down when the bookstore complained that they were only going to make huge profits instead of obscene profits.

After DS looked at that NEX website, the prices he communicated, being charged for uniforms, is no bargain I seem to remember PX (old Army guy I am) as being less, not more than comparable clothing available elsewhere.....maybe my memory is wrong?

For example, from the NEX online store: SDB Jacket $250-$365 (there are two versions).....SDB Trousers $72-$160 (again multiple versions offered)

It's not so much that uniforms are cheap, they are definitely not, but that direct from NEX you have access to everything and not just the limited supply on campus. Plus they will ship right to school. I have had good success ordering from them in the past.

SDBs are about the most expensive uniform and not worth the extra money for the Brooks Brothers versions. They just don't get worn enough.

Don't think they should be cheap (inexpensive or poorly made), but, would hope they could be offered at least at a price that is comparable to a piece of clothing on the open market at a "for profit" store. The clothes seem a little high to me. Does NEX operate for profit? Uh oh....could it be the vendor(s) charge what they can, government contract awarded,so the service men and women must pay more because the cost to NEX or PX is more?

The NEX is by far the most reliable place to get Navy uniforms (unless you are over in Okinawa or Saigon, etc etc). Remember the SDB is a suit jacket that will really last a long time if you treat it properly. I still have a plebe issue SDB jacket and that's from 14yrs ago now. If you can find a Navy certified uniform elsewhere you are more than welcome to purchase it; however, remember you will still need to get it tailored whereas if you purchase it from the NEX (even online) they will tailor it for free. Also in regards to SDB jackets they will need to get striped with your rank, etc which is no cheap feat.

My number 1 source for Navy uniforms is Abbott Uniform shop down in Pensacola. They are a terrific, family run store that makes a great product. You pay for it though. They will keep your measurements on file for future orders as well.

As to comparable price for a uniform: they charge what the market will bear. If there is a company out there that can do it for less on a regular basis and people flock to that source then the prices at the NEX will come down. Overall though that will never happen because there just isn't the demand. Personally I don't think I'm getting ripped off when I buy a new uniform, even when I have to "slum" it at the NEX instead of Abbotts

This is a serious answer so sorry that some are likely to take it as glib:

If you want NEW uniforms NEX Uniform Shop is the place to go and order them.

If you are a current mid and just want/need some replacements and are okay with some lightly used uniforms then the easiest, cheapest place to get them are from someone who just washed out and doesn't want to take them with them when they leave. DS and friends have from time to time taken such things into the city and given them to homeless.

KPEngineer relative to the bookstore thing with used books apparently something has changed because I know several of DS' friends who have made a pretty penny selling left behind books from washouts on both EBay and/or Amazon.com. 'Just sayin'

I think what got him in trouble was the scale of his operation. He had many more than a few books in his room. I recall about a dozen six foot tall stacks of books. There was a longer line outside of his room than there was outside of the bookstore. They accused him of operating a business on government property.

Guy sounds like a pretty typical Kings Pointer. Was he voted "most likely to succeed" in your graduating class and what kind of car does he drive when he comes back for homecoming? I'm betting he's been doing well...:thumb:

4 wks ago.....the good old days

Ah, the good old days........worrying about cold Wx issue. What is/has gone on at that place is disgraceful.
