I am a complete novice in swimming. All I know how to do as of now is tread water and go from point A to point B in a pool. How can I go from being a complete beginner in swimming to working on my CSS? Should I take classes or just self-assess?

Thanks

The classes at Navy will teach you to be a competent swimmer. CSS is not taught, but there are enough NSW/EOD personnel and aspirants around who will be willing to teach you.

My son was similar. You will be fine. They will get you to where you need to be if you do nothing. Any work before hand is good.

Did your son go down the NSW/EOD pipeline?
No.

After my son commissions next May, in two years he is looking at underwater construction/demolition. He plans on working with his water polo friend next semester to strengthen his swimming.

Awesome. Congratulations to you and your son.

All I’m concerned about is my ability to do well on the PST in regards to the swim portion. All the other events I believe I have complete control over as I know how to train for each event.

Swimming is in your control too. It will take effort outside of formal instruction. There is a lot of help at USNA. There have been people who show up as non-swimmers who go NSW.

If you are interested in this stroke and the pipeline follow Stew Smith on social media. Stew is a USNA grad, former SEAL, former USNA company officer and now runs a business preparing young adults for various training programs. He posts tons of training info including various swimming programs and stroke technique. You can learn alot just from these posts. He has plenty of training programs and check ins if you want to pay, but plenty available info that doesn’t cost a penny. Also, once you get to USNA there are SEAL and EOD officers and enlisted on the yard that will help with this. Also plenty of senior Mids selected for these pipelines or training for it to help out too.

Stew Smith also comes to the Academy every Sunday where he coaches mids in sidestroke. There’ll be plenty of opportunities at the Academy to learn combat sidestroke.
