Hey everybody,

I've got a buddy of mine, he is into the National Guard and i'm just trying to gather some information for him, especially on the officer side of things. How exactly does the SMP work? is in conjunction or seperate to ROTC? And speaking of ROTC, I know that cadets will commission into either AD, Reserves, or National Guard. Do they get to pick? If they do get to, is it based on OML? I've read about "Selected Candidates" being able to pick, but what does that mean? I understand that I've put a ton of questions out there, but any and all answers are welcomed and thanked. Thank you all.

SMP stands for Simultaneous Membership Program. This implies that you are participating in at least 2 programs... in this case AROTC and the Guard. You participate in both. When you successfully complete AROTC you commission into the Guard. I'm pretty sure you cannot sign up for SMP until you are a sophomore, at least if you're pursuing AROTC. One can do SMP and still commission into active duty provided they do not accept any scholarship money from the guard (pretty sure on that).

Any AROTC cadet can choose to go into the guard or reserves when they commission. One must be selected for active duty based on their performance.

I'll leave additional details to some of the ROOs who hang out here (@clarksonarmy and @MohawkArmyROTC among others). Alternatively your friend could reach out to the ROO at any AROTC unit he plans to participate in to get the details. One should always discuss this with their ROO before signing anything as it can get pretty tricky and some cadets don't end up where they thought they wanted to be.

Thank you, Kinnem, for the information above and for the piece of advice at the end, I will pass it all along to my friend.
