I just had a question about communication with the outside world during plebe summer/plebe year.

How often can plebes make phone calls during plebe summer? Or plebe year?
Are midshipmen every allowed to have cell phones?
Are plebes allowed to use a computer or laptop during the both of them?
Also what are the restrictions on letters during plebe year/summer?

Three phone calls, about 12 days apart.
Or plebe year?

Unlimited by the academy, each company can control the use of electronics. Have not heard of this happening regarding cellphones.

Plebes do not have use of computers or laptops during plebe summer. They do have access to computers and laptops during the academic year.

None, however, in the spirit of trying not to stick out, realize that mail is picked up for the plebes during plebe summer by upperclassmen. Once Academic year starts, each mid picks up their own mail. It was common courtesy in 14th Company to share any "goodies" received in care packages.
 
Are there any rules about listening to music with ear buds through your laptop while in your room?
 
the plebes I was with in 10th company weren't allowed to have any kind of speaker (including earbuds) but they said you can get a waiver or something for some foreign language classes but that its almost not worth it because those classes are so hard that its going to kill your GPA which will effect everything until you're in the fleet...
 
No music, no media during plebe year, with rare exceptions.

Letters were a lifeline during plebe summer. We wrote EVERY SINGLE DAY.

Now that Ac Year is (well) underway, we talk frequently, letting our plebe call US as he is able. We write and send care packages alot less often, since reassurance is just a phone call away.
 
Are plebes allowed to bring their own laptop during the academic year? or are they issued their own/have to use issued computer?
 
For the phones and music players, it really depends on the company leaders. I just stayed with a few Plebes in 5th Company last weekend, and they are not allowed to have music players for all Plebe year, but they are pretty chill about headphones and music on the computer. They have had cell phones since the beginning of the academic year. As for other forms of communication, they were not allowed to be on facebook for the first semester. Some company commanders are still strict about that.
 
I was a drag in 5th too! They did not listen to music but they were always on facebook, i even got to play my mids call of duty on the computer while he was studying (hes only allowed to play on the weekends).

plebes do not rate media unless granted by the training staff or required for a foreign language. my company makes us check out our headphones for foreign languages. they collected everyone's so we aren't even allowed to have them.

and takinga foreign language plebe year isn't a gpa killer. i love my french class and i'm doing well in it. in fact, the only people i know that are struggling in a language are unsat in other courses too. level 1 language courses aren't that bad.
