WOW! I can not believe that in a few months I will be applying to the academies. It seems like I have blinked and I am here. I haven't been that active due to enjoying high school , friends and a job! I suggest that younger applicants take a break from this forum and ENJOY LIFE! It makes everything speed up instead of anxiously checking this thread! (I was once in that position!)

Anyways, the reason I posted this thread is because I want HONEST advice on my stats and Information on what I should be doing when the application opens up. I am from WA-05 and I don't think it is insanely competitive, however; it just takes a better applicant:) If you are from WA-05 or WA in general please feel free to let me know how the timeframe works for the senators.

My Stats:

ASB Officer(2 years) plan on running for President]
Class Council -1 year
Part of my city's Youth Leadership Program
Varsity Lax - (COVID cancelled frosh year) 1 year
Club lax - 3+ years
Competiton Skiier - 2 years
JV XC - 2 years
Frosh FB - 1 year
Varsity Knowledge Bowl - 1 year
Varsity Debate - 2 years
State and National qualifier for Debate - 2 years
Tutor at a center - average about 8 hours a week
Volunteer Tutor
Volunteer Junior Camp Counselor
Volunteered at a food bank
1 sports award
1 academic award

4.0 GPA - Multiple Honors and AP class's

So I guess I'm asking - what should I improve on?, When should I start beginning my applications and if you are from WA - How is the nomination process?

Starting point ..read the Admissions website, all drop downs, etc.. and all official sources. That is all that you really need to know. If you have questions about the process ...talk to your BGO.

Everything on here, to the extent accurate and relevant (there is plenty of well meaning, but inaccurate or irrelevant information here), might help you feel like you have better control, but you really don't. Submit your best application, in a timely manner. Then sit back and relax. Bottom line, worry about what you can control, not what you can't.

I don't comment on stats and "chance me's"--there are plenty of those threads on SAF, and they often fall within my comment of well meaning, but inaccurate or irrelevant information here. The best you can do is look up the Class Profile Admissions publishes for each Class, and see how you stack up. Even then, even that is largely dependent upon the competitiveness of where you are applying from.

Good luck.

I'm from Washington and both of our Senators use an online portal this is very similar to most college applications. They both require an essay, SAT/ACT scores, letters of rec., your resume, and your transcripts. Make sure to check both the Senators and your MOC's website for all of the specific application info! If I remember correctly, both of them opened in May and I would highly recommend talking to your letter of rec writers before summer so that you can enter their info into the portal and they can submit the letters before break or right when school starts up. Both of the deadlines are Mid-November, but I would definitely try and get them done ASAP. Also, unlike my MOC application, our Senators do not hold any interviews. Good luck with your application and let me know if you have any more questions!

+100!

We all mean well. Some of us know more — or less — than others. Some have direct experience. Some have vicarious experience. Some haven’t gone through an entire admission cycle. The thing we all have in common is that we have no idea what your chances are, no matter how much information you share. Zero, zip, zilch, nada!

Some will say your stats look like theirs and they got in. Some will say your stats look like theirs and they didn’t get in. So…eyes in the boat. Worry only about what you control. And work on Plan B.

It’s nearly impossible to speculate on chances, but just as Old Navy BGO mentioned, look at the various class portraits which they have posted. You definitely seem to be off on the right foot, and learn as much as you can about the process as possible as it can prove to be helpful later on. All you can do is enjoy life and keep working hard, because as mentioned at the end of the day the decision isn’t something you have control over. Keep working and keep learning!

-Strive to get the best ACT/SAT scores you can.
-Make sure you're taking strongest courses you can for STEM (Science and Math).
-Get hold of latest essay questions and start on those early-seek input from trusted persons
-Continue to excel in leadership positions & ECAs-that you also like to do!
-Help those in class that are struggling
-Develop and strengthen your relationships with Math and English teachers

Keep the good attitude you appear to have.

Thank you! Does the BGO have any impact on decisions? I have contacted him already :)!

Thank you so much!

Admissions makes the appointment decisions-not the BGO. BGOs' conduct interviews (on most candidates) and write a graded report for Admissions regarding their impression during interview. BGOs' should provide assistance and guidance to candidates during the process. I prefer potential applicants contact me or Admissions for guidance early in their high school years.

How good are you in lax?

Are you on a top club team?

Even as a potential walk on as opposed to a highly recruited type lax could end up being a little extra wind at your back.

The best advice, as a person who is done applying to USMA, is to start your application early and finish it early. Especially the DODMERB. Don't let that January deadline fool you, the DODMERB alone can eat months of your time. Don't worry about your chances of getting in, as if you are already applying, you won't change them significantly(Unless you run around burning buildings).

Main thing is read all the way through the top pinned post on the USNA list of posts: "USNA Admissions FAQ"

It is well written and has information on a bunch of what you may be wondering. Instead of asking folks about any individual situation, that post is designed to give you the general trends or stated policies that you can apply to your own case. Highly recommend.
