Concussion Protocol Test

Hello. My DC is an appointee starting at the USAFA this summer. I've been reading these forums for a while but this is my first question. I hope someone can help.

What happens if the appointee fails the concussion protocol test they're supposed to take via their portal? My DC hasn't had a concussion since a mild one in middle school, but they're concerned about it.

Thank you!

No idea, but I am curious about this requirement. Seeing the effects of concussions can be scary, so I am glad they are requiring this. Could this simply be a baseline evaluation for future concussion effects? I know DS had that done once at USNA. so there wasnt anything to fail at that time.

They only concussion test I'm aware of is the baseline as mentioned above. It'll be used to compare a possible hit and evaluation through the concussion process. Because of the fact that each incoming applicants has different levels of reactions (possibly due to a previous concussion) they need a baseline for each cadet.

Thank you very much for responding! The biggest concern was that it would affect if they were allowed to do BCT, or prevent them from participating in sports. Would you have any information about that?

I'm not a medical personal so take it with a grain of salt. However from previous knowledge of the concussion is not current (on going) I've never heard of someone being turned away. Not many concussions come from basic and it would be very hard to get some started in basic due to I-Day along with basic wakes up and the intensity of noise day to day. Since it sounds like it was a past concussion, not on going and currently not affecting him I don't see an issue. However again not an expert please ask usafa and medical doctor for more information

Thank you again. I appreciate it.

This is just to establish a baseline for all cadets so if they do happen to take any knocks they can be tested against the baseline for any deviations that may indicate a concussion. During basic, at Jack's Valley on obstacles, using pugil sticks and playing sport (all cadets do boxing at USAFA) it's not uncommon to take a hit so getting a baseline before they arrive helps diagnose any potential issues.

Thank you so much! That is a big load off and I appreciate it.

Google searches define it as:
"ImPACT testing is a computer-based evaluation that helps determine your growing athlete's brain function before and after a concussion."

Most high schools do the same thing with athletes so if your appointee played a sport in high school, he/she has likely done it there. As others have said, it's to get a baseline of what is "normal" for your appointee so they have something to compare it to in the event they are suspected of having a concussion later on. There's no pass/fail to it. Nothing to worry about.
