Cornovirus and Grades

Due to COVID-19, the majority of my second semester like others has been switched to remote learning.

This has made it extremely difficult to get the support I need to maintain my grades in my difficult course load.

7th semester I had a 4.5 GPA. Thus far in my 8th semester Its looking like a 4.1. With most of my classes being B's and maybe one C.

Should i be concerned by
one: the drop in GPA normally?
two: the drop in GPA considering COVID-19?

I would HOPE that all the SAs would be understanding in this unprecedented time and rest assured, most folks will be in similar situations as they navigate this time.

Cornovirus... that's a new one. Shoulda known corn was the mastermind behind all this!

Now, on a serious note... the transition to online learning has its struggles, given the times I think it's safe to say SAs will understand. I've been online schooling throughout high school and the biggest challenge is not being able to get the help needed. I'm sure many who have transitioned to online from a brick and mortar school are also struggling, but a 4.1 is still great! Don't worry about it too much! Communicate your struggles with your teachers and hopefully, they can help. I myself am a big fan of Khan Academy and the many tutors on Youtube with super helpful videos for classes where I still can't get the help I need.

Virtually every single student in America is in a remote-learning situation. Many will improve their grades despite the new challenges. Many will see their grades fall because of the new challenges.

All else being equal, pretty sure the SAs will favor those in the former group -- the ones who rose to the challenge, overcame the barriers, and showed they can adapt and succeed. That's what's expected of future commissioned officers who'll face constantly changing conditions and still be expected to achieve the mission.

Does the academy typically rescind people when there grades fall in the 8th semester?

If grades fall drastically they may... don't let that happen! Take control of your situation and finish these last couple of months strong. A 4.1 seems unlikely to be rescinded, but consistent C's or lower, maybe. All I can really say is just don't get yourself in that situation because I don't make the rules. You got this!

Thank you :D

Your appointment will not be rescinded for a 4.1 GPA.

D's and F's will get you into trouble; At this point, B's and C's are very unlikely to cause a problem unless there is some other negative factor accompanying the grades.

I cant imagine how this will play out...

Our schools are basically being told they aren't allowed to enter new grades, so there is no excel or struggle. You either get a check mark or an X on each busy-work assignment. No final exams are allowed, either.

AP tests are still on, but they dont affect grades.

I wish this was how our school did it. Currently, nobody knows how we are supposed to be graded on assignments and tests.

It really Is a mish mash, no consistency. Even within our state, the school districts are soooo varied in how they are accommodating this virtual semester. Some are doing NOTHING.

It will be interesting to see how all this is looked at by USNA next cycle. Maybe they will use gpa through 7th semester as their guide? Rising to the challenge and overcoming is difficult if ones school isn’t even in session. All one can do is what they can do. If nothing else, there is lots of good essay material here!
