My son is beginning his freshman year on a type 1 AFROTC scholarship and we received paperwork today with a list of things he needs to have completed. One item states:

Copy of Immunization Records With Fully Completed COVID-19 Vaccine

Must include proof of infection of VZV [Chicken Pox] from doctor if cadet does not have vaccination.

His university just stopped their Covid mandate in May, so I’m wondering if they just did not get that information or if my so. Is required to get the Covid vaccine. Can a cadre make their own rules on this? Are religious exemptions considered in this situation?

Thanks for any insight.

Their paperwork may be outdated as the 2023 NDAA rescinded the Covid vaccine requirement but definitely check with them to confirm if you're not planning on getting the shot. That being said, any other vaccine they require, they can enforce. AFROTC is a government organization and if you want to join and/or contract, they can force you to get the vaccines, such as the Chicken Pox vaccine.

In short, yes, they (the Air Force as a whole, not the Cadre) can set their own rules that are different from the university since they are not the same. Think of it as a club that's hosted at the school, not a school-sponsored program.

You can go the religious exemption route, but make sure it's legit and you can get documentation and not just because you don't want it because they're sharks when it comes to approving that.

He should check with his unit to confirm it's needed.

From what I understand it’s not mandatory no more but just double check

A school's requirement is separate and apart from DOD's requirement. For example, South Carolina prohibited a vaccine requirement, but ROTC units in South Carolina still needed to comply with the DOD requirement. That said, I also believe that the DOD requirement has been rescinded, but you should confirm with the unit.

Proof of infection from VZV is sort of falling by the wayside and sort of difficult to confirm.

A lot of schools, jobs, etc are requiring a titer. If the titer is negative, they will need the vaccine. Sometimes it is combined with the MMR.
