Hello!
DS received the NROTC MO scholarship! Elated to say the least, but questions regarding college major and driving 1 hour each way to the cross town affiliate college 2 days/week. How difficult is this with an EE major? Any advise?

First, congratulations on your scholarship and huge respect for planning on EE. My master's thesis was very heavy in EE and that stuff is no joke!

This is a simple question of time. You're electing for one of the most challenging college majors so you'll already have less time than your peers. Plus you'll have your NROTC responsibilities. On top of that, you're sacrificing commute time too. However, as the cross-town student you can't as easily get pulled into unit activities (a comment I've heard from friends who were in your shoes).

So, to answer your question: it's going to be difficult, but doable and worth it. I'd recommend thinking of the commute time as some of your "off" time -- that's when you're listening to a podcast, talking to your folks on bluetooth, etc., because you sure can't do those things and study the mathematics of calculating three phase reactance and impedance. 🤓

Thank you! Appreciate the response!
Happy to hear the encouragement and I will pass it on to him.
Is there a data source for MO degree choices and success through graduation?
The few other MO students he’s spoken to were quite surprised at his choice of major.
Thank you!

Have him try to make his schedule lighter on crosstown days. I know my DD is on campus with hers, but her Tuesday and Thursdays are kept focused on AF ROTC.

The Corps basically doesn't care about your major. They only care that you'll graduate on time with great grades. That being said, I think folks will excel academically if they major in an area they are generally interested in.

DS was a History major because he loved history. I tried for a while to get him to go STEM but he was adamant. Nevertheless he has a very STEM oriented job in the Corps. They'll teach you what you need to know.

If your son is interested in EE, he should stick with it. Both NROTC and EE can be challenging but I'm sure many Navy options pull it off. Your son can too.

I'm a EE major who has to travel crosstown too (for AROTC not NROTC). I'll be perfectly honest: The major is hard. Very hard. I average about 4-5 hours of sleep a night if I'm lucky.

It's a struggle to get everything done in a day which I need to. That all being said, it is possible. It is up to your son to decide how much he can handle. I'd say if he's dead set on doing ROTC and being an EE major, give it a shot. He can always switch majors if he needs to (I've seen a lot of people do it and there's no shame in it).

Thank you everybody! Good luck to you js9907! Do you mind sharing what year of college you are currently in?

Hi! I was a crosstown student, current JO. I can confirm... 100% worth the drive. It's amazing to go into military mode at one school and then be a 100% normal student in the other school.
