I remember this time last year having so many unanswered questions and vigorously scrolling SAF to find answers.

In light of that, I will try my best to answer any questions you might have. INDOC, academics, life at kp, admissions, etc.

what professors do you want for Physics and Calculus?

While the reality is that professors for calc and physics are hit or miss. I don’t necessarily believe that naming the specific professors helps in this case.

When you get here you have no say in who you get as a professor. The only thing you can do is figure out how to pass the class.

I will tell you that the Calc department here is solid. Physics is hit or miss. There are professors that are known to be harder to pass for a variety of reasons. I believe the Academy is shifting in a direction to where the younger new professors are teaching the plebe killers.

Hope this helps.

Best advice I have to be ready academically is:

- Do your best to know everything about Calc,Chem, and physics before you arrive @ INDOC… You don’t have to have taken the Ap level courses to do well(It will only help if you do). I always took Honors and on level in HS.

-If you took any of these core classes during Covid. Review the material and make sure you actually know the course. This has been a HUGE problem this year. A lot of us “took” Calc, Chem, or physics during covid and the consequences have been showing.

- Overall just be ready to put in the work Academically while balancing all the other parts of Academy life.

If you revive an appointment, you’re more than qualified to get through here.

Hope this helps a little!

What do breaks look like? how much time after your finals for each Tri and for Christmas and all that. I assumed its not much but trying to get ballpark range.

Expect about a week and a half after each trimester/finals.

Thanksgiving is around 9 days.

Christmas break is around 2 weeks.

Kp really is a year round grind with the trimester system.

Summers vary. The official summer break is around a month but Sea year usually will take place during 2 of your summers depending on your sea split. If you’re not at sea you will most likely have to work INDOC which means you will have a 2 week summer, then come back to work INDOC.

If you pass all of your classes you won’t have academics during the summer. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean you will be home due to the reasons mentioned above.

Also, a lot of people have came back from sea early and that allowed them to be at home for a couple weeks.

Hope this helps :)

Are you sure about 9 days for Thanksgiving? This is from the USMMA calendar. I also thought rising seniors primarily worked indoc.

You are right. I apologize for that mistake.

Rising seniors do primarily run Indoc. Additional sea splits from various classes have been assigned to work the upcoming Indoc. My guess is it’s for additional support.

Just as you relied on this forum, so many do. So just wanted to let everybody know. You must be freezing there tonight, hopefully the heat issues there of late have been corrected.

This is very helpful thanks!

I’m currently a NROTC midshipman and I’m taking chem and naval science classes. Is there anyway I can transfer these credits to KP?

No. Credits do not transfer. You will be starting over. Obviously, you would have a leg up by having already taken these classes in college.

The big thing with exempting classes is whether they were taken in college or not. I know a couple of Plebes that have taken chem, calc, or physics in college and have exempted them. Many also decided not to, as many classes here build on top of each other(you could use it as a gpa booster).

The academy reviews your grade and the syllabus from the course you took when they decide on accepting it. Nothing is guaranteed.

So yes, while you could potentially exempt a class or too. You would be coming into the Academy as a plebe no different than other plebes right from HS.

It all depends on what opportunities you want. Depending on the situation, I could see starting over here working out and affording you some truly unique opportunities.

I am extremely close with fellow plebes who have been to college for 2+ years and decided to start all over again to come here.

In summary. Yes you could potentially exempt a chem class along with a naval science. If you did, it won’t make much of a course load difference here. You would be starting over as a plebe.

Hope this helps. Best of luck :)

Feel free to pm me with any ?s

I know that not many personal items are authorized to plebes, at least initially. Having said that, would you happen to know at what point would a guitar be allowed?

Is it correct that unlike the other SAs you don't get monthly pay at USMMA?

True, because unlike at the other SAs, USMMA mids aren't active duty. However, for their year at sea they are paid. I don't know how much or whether it varies depending on assignment. OP might know that.

My mid made around $1200 per month before taxes on MSC and commercial ships. No pay for time he was on training vessels.
