    Greetings everyone-

I know this has been discussed numerous times in the past with somewhat conflicting information and numbers but does anyone have the current "value" of a West Point appointment? My DS has his high school exit interview this week where they ask him that and we are uncertain of the true current value for this purpose.

    thanks in advance

Are you talking about the estimated cost of attendance?

I know the cost of attendance for a cadet is zero but the true cost (combined value of the tuition, room and board, stipend, training is very high)

I suspect that someone on here has received that value for scholarship reporting purposes this year?

Proudpop2... this is from Facebook's WestPoint class of 2021 Parents page...
    Public
"We have a print out - Public Law 96-357 that breaks it down into one year as of 2015. If you multiply by 4, the total cost is $237,720."
    Did you see that post?

We were told $500k plus for everything , uniforms, pay, etc by admissions individual
I believe they also factor in all of the summer training, travel as well.

    From West Point's FAQ page:

How long must I serve in the Army?
You must serve at least five years of active duty and three years in a Reserve Component, a total of eight years, after you graduate. The active duty obligation is the nation's return on a West Point graduate's fully funded, four-year college education that is valued in excess of $225,000.

Basically its better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. But really, it will only be as valuable as the effort you put into it....

The value of an asset is only what someone else, other than the Government, is willing to pay for it.

$225k is a good estimate of the value of the education. Consider a comparable education from a civilian college at $50k - $75k per year.

That number does not include the cost of military training, cadet pay, etc. A number closer to $400k would be the total cost of putting a cadet through four years of West Point.

Years ago, West Point used the $400,00o figure in appointment presentations, but then they decided to go with the $200,00o figure because it was more in line with civilian schools, because as pointed out by jl123 above, civilian schools don't have the military training cost.
