CVW

Why would someone who has come as far as being invited for CVW deliberately disrespect the mids or the institution? I could see it happening inadvertantly but  deliberately?

It happens: Remember the canidates come from the general population and look at your typical high school kid. Very little consequence for showing lack of respect to teachers or institutions. Worse mom and dad defend the little nipper anytime someone tries to decipline them. The "attitude" is there and the kids project it.

As my mid told me " On paper some kids look like real stars, but you see them in real life actions and they are a ####bag."

I would have thought these type of kids wouldn't make it past their BGOs or MoC. Why would they want to join an institution they disrespect, for the "free" education?

I assume they will be cut down to size pretty quick or drop out.

Well I was able to reach my regional director today. He was very happy to schedule me in for this weeks CVW when he saw I had an appointment and I mentioned that I am trying to decide between USNA and AFA. Looking forward to it! He said to arrive around 5:00pm. That opens up the possibility of driving, about 9 hours according to Google... Thoughts? Flying would be about $300. I was also supposed to receive an email, which hasn't arrived yet! Hopefully that will come soon enough.

This is just a follow-on comment to USNA 1985 post:

My mid has had "drags" at CVW and was a Cadre at last years SS.

General Comments:

The quickest way to ####off a midshipman is for a cadidate or SS participant to show deliberate disrespect to midshipman. Worse is to show disrespect for the institution itself. The midshipman have very strick rules on what they can and can not do to a candidate but trust me if they have an opportunity to respond they will take it.

Secondly, phisically candidates are all over the map, midshipman know this. They respect the kids that do not quit, even if they drag themselves over the finish line.

Just some thoughts

Is there an example you can give us? I'm a little curious/concerned.

There is no need for concern on your part. If the Naval Academy is what you want, you will naturally conduct yourself in a professional manner and listen to your upperclass. What I was relaying was comments/stories told to me by my mid.

Most of my comments about disrespect can apply to both CVW and SS but the examples you requested are from a conversation with my mid after SS:

Show up and make it very clear, numerous times, usually while wearing your High School letter jacket, you are gods gift to the Academy.
Mouth off to your cadre, mutiple times
For my mid this was the topper: In Memorial Hall, while explaining the purpose of the Academy and the significance of the plaques on the walls with the names of the fallen graduates to a group of SS participents one of these kids went out of his way to deliberatly act board, disrespectful and disrupted the presentation.

Ah, thank you. Fortunately, I did not run into any of those types at NASS. I'm sorry your son had to deal with such a character.

Would I be overdressing if i wore a shirt and tie with slacks for the CVW this weekend?

My son attended in January and he said that he was happy he wore what he did - jeans and a button down shirt to arrival (and no letterman jacket!!) and then wore a button down, long sleeve shirt and khakis for Friday with street shoes (brown lace up) and then had his jeans and sweatshirt for Saturday. He said no one that he saw had a tie on.....some arrived with one on and you could tell they felt overdressed. I think the main thing to wear is a good attitude and ask questions and get up and do the workout in the morning....experience it all. He roomed with a boxing team member and did the run in the morning and their workout.

I am going this w/end

My invite was an email with little detail other than arrive at 5 and depart at 1230. No info for the time in between. I've read up as much as possible. Also curious about SMT. Thanks for all the detail. K

Comfortable casual clothes. Jeans, slacks, button down shirts, collar shirts, snacks for the room (highly reccomended), warm jacket depending upon time of year (Daughter did February and it was brutaly cold), good attitude, lots of questions, gym clothes for possible PT and or swimming (if company has that scheduled), Sleeping bag for the room, if you have three in your assigned room you will get a military cot to sleep on. During orientation Parents can ask questions after CVW candidates leave and go to Bancroft. The old "Dad/Mom why did you say/ask that?" Open discussion for parents to ask any questions they like.

Looks like nothing has changed. Same schedule we had except no parade for us. Good luck to all and have a great time.:thumb:

# attendees ?

About how many people participate on a given weekend ? I've read about 100 per CVW. I've heard of less than that. Any idea ?

I would love to know this as well. My son will be there today.

When my son was out there last month, there were about 75-100.

Son arrived at 10:30 this morning. I am very excited for him. Think he is having breakfast at the airport as I type.....before he takes the super shuttle to the academy. Good luck to all those visiting this weekend!

I am sitting in the Starbucks in downtown Annapolis as I right this. I will be going to the Academy in about an hour to start my visit for this weekend. I'll let everyone know what it was like in case future candidates want to know. Can't wait to go!

You should fortify yourself with an Aromi D'Italia gelato, a midshipman favorite, before walking through the gate for your CVW.
Turn left out of the Starbucks, walk to end of sidewalk, cross street to red brick buildings on left, look for Aromi D'Italia Cafe on ground floor. Best gelato around!
Enjoy your CVW.

It is so fum to read the stories and advice. Although I'm only a freshman in hs I pray that I'll attend the USNA and go to CVW, also SS. I counting down the years in my head. : )
