Dates for A day and R day 2023

After A day how far away are cadets allowed to go? We live about 60 miles away- could ours come home for the day after A day, then back to West Point for the evening?

You may not know that for sure until a week or two before A Day.
 
What is the ID process like the day before R Day? I assume that my wife and I will need to go to the Security office to get access passes but do the cadet candidates need them as well? Also, I imagine in can take quite a while to get through the potentially 1000 people dropping off their CC's.

Yes. You will bring your kid’s acceptance letter and stand in line at the Visitors Center to get your pass for the next four years—unless you have military ID cards.

Looking at west points parent page, usually they get walking privledges after the parade and can go with the parents for the day but have to report back until 1am. Then they can spend the day again with family on Sunday until later in the afternoon.

Last year the mile radius of their walking privledges was 20 miles where they’re allowed to go. Not sure if that will be the same this year, which is why I asked.

So, get there in the middle of the day and get acclimated. The parade/swearing in ceremony is on the Plane at the end of the day (usually around 6 p.m.) .You will drop your kid off in the morning and not talk to him or her again. You can start the trip home after the ceremony or even before...but you might want to be there.

A-Day. Arrive the afternoon or evening before. You will not be able to see or visit with your kid on Friday. Go super early on Saturday to get a great seat in the bleachers for the A-Day Parade, which usually starts around 1000...PICK A MEETING SPOT IN ADVANCE! and then you are with your cadet until around midnight! Then on Sunday, you can pick your cadet up early and have brunch, church, shopping, touring USMA, listening to war stories, etc...but then your cadet migth wish to prepare for the first day of school...which is Monday morning....so you may be done by 2 p.m. although they are allowed to be out until either 5 or 7 p.m.

Your cadet will have his or her phone back after the March Back so the plans for A-Day can be tweaked closer to the time but a Sunday late afternoon or evening flight home is a o.k. or even starting the drive home.

For A-Day, you should plan to arrive the Friday before. For departure, you could plan a late afternoon Sunday departure, or better yet, Monday if that option is available for you.

With regards to hotels, you should look at Peekskill (south across the river), Newburgh to the north, and Nanuet/Spring Valley to the south as options within the likely mileage limits for A-Day.

I would probably avoid the Thayer for A-Day. Most Cadets will probably want to leave West Point.
If you can swing an Airbnb/rental it might be more relaxing.
If you’re local or in the area you can watch the March Back, but you will not be able to meet with your Cadet when they are done.

What if we already have a valid pass from a previous visit? Can we skip the Visitor’s Center?
