The next Navy option board is 23-27 OCT. Nurse option applications can be selected on any of the Navy boards, but the last couple years the bulk of the students awarded scholarships were selected in the last couple boards (Mar/Apr). In total last year I believe only 19 nurse option scholarships were awarded.
And the number awarded is way lower than what I expected
I was in the Army reserves before and after 9/11. I can't speak for the Navy, but there was a real paradigm shift in the Army during and after Desert Storm. We no longer try to do definitive treatment in a war zone. We stabilize and ship. Instead of bringing all that expensive equipment in-theater, the new model is to take the wounded to a place where stray mortar rounds aren't falling. We no longer need to staff those huge general hospitals that close to the fighting. And if they can make it back to the States, it is cheaper for the DoD to hire civilian contract nurses for the hospitals.
