First, if you are waiting for an EA notice, check the "Application Status" on Bear's Den. There may be a link to a decision letter.

Second, is anyone aware of the stats for applicants deferred from EA to RA who choose to continue? Will AOs typically give any useful feedback on the reason for the deferral?

Same situation here. My ACT scores and Fitness scores are above the average accepted, the essays I submitted are my best effort.

I will send in my first semester test scores but not sure if there is anything else to do. Will contact my AO for sure.

Same here! Still hope!!! My DS got back his improved SAT score yesterday. Sent it in but too late for EA. He will work on his PFE. Grades are perfect. So he will focus on PFE and still waiting for ACT score.
GOOD LUCK!

It’s not all about grades and PFE. Does your DS/DD have leadership experience? That’s not something you can change with one 3 hour test. And that’s what the Academy is about. Creating Leaders for he Coast Guard.

I hear you. But how would that factor change in three months? In other words, if that were the issue for an applicant, then why wouldn't they simply deny the applicant instead of deferring him?

Good point. They probably did deny those without leadership. There is good news. At Cadet for a Day, LCDR Park said they save one slot til they read the very last application. There's still hope!

My DD just opened her Bears Den Acct and found a link to her decision -- Deferred. We obviously were hoping for a more positive decision (Appointment or CGAS), but she seems relieved to have some answer. Wondering if AO can provide some feedback (after the holiday), or if it's a matter of just waiting. Letter states answer by April 1, but I assume it could also mean an answer before then. Anyone know how Deferment works? Is the application reviewed at the end of RD, or randomly placed in the pile to re-evaluate? Congrats to those who have been appointed or offered CGAS!

Did some back of the envelope math. Another thread says that the acceptance letters say that there will be fewer than 350 Appointments to build a class of 265 for 2024. (First observation is that they seem to be expecting higher yield this year than last, in which they offered 392 Appointments for a class of 279.) Anyway, adding 55 Appointments (a guesstimation) to account for incoming CGAS to the 189 Appointments already given means that, in effect, 244 are already accounted for, meaning that somewhere between 100-110 full Appointments remain for RD if the 350 number is accurate.

Now, how many of those will end up going to deferred applicants vs new applicants, and the size of the pool of remaining qualified applicants (presumably all deferred from EA are considered qualified), are unknowns.

That’s where the wait list comes in. I forget how many they took off the list last year. I think it was around 30. It all depends on how many decide not to attend. There are a lot of Undecided on the list of those accepted. They’re waiting to hear from their #1.

How long will they accept new PFE and SAT scores? Is Jan 15 the deadline for those, or will they accept new scores until April 1 (or some other date)?

Our letter of deferral states that we should send any improved scores by February 1st.

Jan 15 is the cut off for a reply email stating that you would like to be re-evaluated for RA. Feb 1 is for resubmit for scores, grades, etc...

FWIW, DS was deferred to the waitlist multiple times last year. Each time he had to send an email that he was still interested.

Does anybody know if there are students waitlisted for EA.? During EA are some applicants rejected or is everyone rolled over to RA.

I believe some are outright rejected while others can be waitlisted or given an appointment to either USCGA or the Scholars program

I have leadership experience as well. Cadet Commander of CAP squadron, SAR instructor and have helped lead successful missing person searches, leadership team at speech and debate club and officer in national honor society and a few other events.

Is there anything else I can improve during this time? I know not being a recruited athlete hurts my chances greatly however I can’t do anything about that at this time. I think being homeschooled may be a factor even though my classes are thought outside of the home. I am submitting senior grades including calculus at a local college through dual enrollment, hopefully that will help.

Any tips are appreciated!
