Disqualification

FYI Average SAT for USMA Classes of 2018-1247, 2019-1246, 2020-1268, 2021-1295, 2022-1321

I went in cold for my 1350 and definitely don't recommend it- studying even for a month can increase your score by over 150 points, and now I can attest that it's true.

SAT/ACT too low. Don't forget the averages for each class are generally lowered by recruited athletes, so if you are not a recruited athlete you would need to exceed those averages.

Unfortunately, our son took his SAT cold early in his Junior year, only after football ended started SAT Prep and then we saw the next 9 months of SAT exams he registered for cancelled in our location because of COVID. He became so remote from the prep that he rolled with his only score of 1330. We were all frustrated because that was only to be his first test baseline and circumstances didn't permit a second effort at SAT prep or another test. I suspect that we may see a dip in the SAT averages this year because of this type of SAT interruption.

In my opinion, the 1200 SAT is very low for USMA. That also depends on where you are, like in NJ there’s almost no chance for an appointment with a 1200. My friend had a 1280 and wasn’t appointed, I had a 1350 and still think I wasn’t gonna make the cut. In other states, such as out west, a 1200 may be competitive for admission, I honestly couldn’t tell you. Definitely email the RC and ask why he was deemed unqualified. Did he ever receive a 3Q letter?
Did you make the cut with a 1350??

I also heard that having a math sat above 700 is huge though.

I had some other extenuating personal circumstances that prevented me from completing the full application, so I’m now a reapplicant for 2026. I don’t think I would’ve gotten in though, being from New Jersey. According to NJ field force, the best chances of being pulled off the NWL is having a 1400+ with a 700+ math.

My admissions counselor told me that having a 710 Math SAT is a big indicator for academic qualifications. So I suppose that's a good average to shoot for

I'm from Ca and I had a pretty bad math SAT so I sent my ACT, but my ACT was only a 27 and I still received an LOA (I'm also a re-applicant). I think it really comes down to your congressional district and the competition you're up against there and your RC will determine if you are the most competitive to receive an LOA.

True for DS. From Jersey. Had 730 Math. 1460 overall.

It isn’t just the test scores. If you don’t have a 1490 or a 35 ACT you better have a transcript that shows you can nail the STEM classes in high school or college. Our DS did not have 34 or a 1400 and had 3 offers of appointment. I do not mention this as a boast. Not a braggart remark. But an example of earning appointment without a stratospheric test score. Not a recruited athlete. Again it is the whole candidate and what this forum or it’s sage members cannot see are the essays, personal statements, teacher evaluations and FFR and or BGO ALO interviews. This also applies to nomination interviews. Test scores are just one spoke on a very complex wheel.

Strong SOEs a must too. Especially the 2 additional ones you will need in while in college. See my previous comments on how Admissions protects confidentially on the Academic qualification side of things...

I kind of disagree with that. I had lower than a 1200 Sat, and I finished Hs with a 3.7 Gpa. I believe that it all about your overall profile. You do not want to just be strong in academics, you also have to show WP that your a leader , that your an athlete, and that you can work in a team. Wp is about working as a team, the Army is about working as a team.

Actually, that is also not true. Just to be clear, the average SAT score is the average SAT score for a reason. I think the line of thinking around recruited athletes bringing down the SAT score average is rubbish. The admissions committee is building a class with a purpose. It is not one size fits all.

After reading your post I think we are more in agreement then not.
