Do you still have a chance at becoming a pilot after ROTC?

Hey all,

As a backup plan, I want to go into ROTC at a regular college. Is there still a chance of someone going through ROTC becoming a pilot? Thanks!

Yes. There are more pilots each year from AFROTC and OTS than from the Academy.

Do you mean there are overall more applicant from AFROTC and OTS ? I thought there are more slots available for the Academy and less for others so with the number of ROTC and OTS fighting for fewer slots making it much tougher to get one.

NROTC-MO/PLC still offer a guaranteed aviation slot assuming you pass the ASTB and pre-flight medical.

USAFA gets allocated about half of the available pilot slots each year, but does not always fill them. Roughly 1000 2nd Lt. commission from USAFA and 2000 from AFROTC (rough numbers and it varies year-to-year). So, your chances from AFROTC are less, but for raw numbers of slots AFROTC and OTS together have more than USAFA.

Thank you so much!

I flew for 20 years in the AF. I commissioned out of AFROTC. Granted that was a long time ago.... Get great grades, do well in your unit so you are the number pick. Everything is stratified.

Out of my son's ROTC Commissioning class of 16, 5 that I know of are either currently in UPT or have received their wings and are in their track phase of training.

Have that back up plan 100%!!!!!! ROTC/COLLEGE was my son's plan B. He applied to the USCGA after attending AIM and was denied as college acceptances came in. Accepted a big university in state, hit the ROTC table first at orientation, and the rest is history.

All the best in getting into USAFA!!!!!

At the plan b School my child was looking at, he was told about 50% of people who want flight get it.

I was in a fighter squadron that was probably 70% ROTC/OTS, 30% Academy. I was in a tanker squadron (well, several actually) where it was closer to 50%-50%.
