Hello,
I am entering the Air Force Academy as class of '27, and I am wondering about pay/rank upon graduating. I got my eagle scout around 2-3 months ago, but since the application closed Jan 31, I couldn't update that I got eagle scout rank.
I read somewhere that eagle scouts enter the military as an E3 instead of an E1. Does that two rank bump happen even if you graduate as an O1, or is USAFA like a coupon code that cancels all other potential rank increases (like JROTC and the aforementioned Eagle ranked)?
Not a biggie. I'm simply curious about how it works.

It's a nice accomplishment, but it won't have any bearing on your rank. You'll graduate as a 2nd Lieutenant (O-1).

It has no impact (as a fellow Eagle Scout can attest!). You will graduate as a 2nd Lieutenant with a regular commission (as most other commission sources will provide a reserve commission to others). Congratulations!

Being an Eagle scout does not factor into officer ranking or pay on commissioning. It can affect ranking and therefore pay too for enlisted soldiers upon completion of basic training and beyond. I appreciate the low-key/ humble manner in which you approached the question - thank you - continue to stay humble about HS/youth accomplishments or join the long line of Eagle scouts who name-drop being an eagle somehow into every conversation in their entire adult live. Discussing Mayonnaise? "when I was earning my eagle, I once used a similar mayonnaise on my BLT at the National Jamboree... Discussing the splendid fruits of Bali? "The colors of that starfruit remind me of the cupcakes they served at my Eagle Scout Court of Honor and party"... Haha. Best of luck to you.

Try to be like my DS Eagle / new officer who has mentioned being eagle exactly once in his adult life (the Dad of a young woman he was dating asked him if he was an Eagle after reading about it on social media, and he didn't lie).

by the way, USAFA Cadets in training reportedly rank above enlisted and below commissioned officers. However, operationally and practically, they have no actual authority over anyone except other USAFA Cadets. One person noted during their initial orientation, at USAFA, enlisted were instructed not to salute cadets."

Attaining Eagle Scout rank is a fantastic achievement. One never knows what the future holds. The only person affected in rank was Gerald R. Ford, a Navy officer, who went on to become our 38th President and Commander in Chief. He is the only president to achieve Eagle Scout rank. As a WWII Veteran he had a slew of Eagle Scouts, young and old, pay their respects while his body lay in state at the Presential Museum in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I was fortunate to attend the commissioning of the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) several years ago.

Good luck in BCT. Be prepared.

To answer you question about the enlisted, my son in law entered the Navy after high school, E1 to E 2, then was promoted straight to E4 due to the Eagle status. I know this does not apply to officers, but it was a welcome surprise to him when it happened!

The Navy has a number of enlisted recruiting incentives that move the E-1 recruit more rapidly to initial lower grade auto-promotions, which bring a welcome pay bump.

I am sure other services do similar accelerations for their enlistees.

For example, for Navy JROTC cadets, from the Navy Education and Training Command website:

  • Cadets accepted for enlistment, who provide evidence of successful completion of at least 3 years of NJROTC are entitled to advanced promotion to pay grade E-3 upon initial enlistment in an active or reserve component of the Navy, or Air Force, and pay grade E-2 in the Army or Marine Corps; or completion of 2 years are entitled to E-2 in the Navy.

Here’s an expanded list of promotion accelerators for Navy enlisted, including college credit, Sea Cadets, scouting, etc.:

I only mention my Eagle rank on my resume.

I was at a dinner with my son's friends at families during his 2/C parents' weekend, and someone said that it was nice that that there were two Eagles Scouts sitting at the table. My son, said "Excuse me, but there are three Eagle Scouts sitting here."

They all asked, "You're an Eagle Scout?"

"Nope... But my dad is!"

They asked me why I never told them that I am an Eagle. I answered, "Why would I tell you that?"

It is a good experience, but it does not advance an officer's rank.

Use what you learned! It is very valuable, in that respect. (The field portion of BCT and later SERE is a lot easier with some outdoors skills.)

Just had a CAP cadet start in the Air Force as a E-3 because of his Billy Mitchell award. Eagle scout equivalent for CAP. Does Eagle Scout help you start at a higher rank enlisted wise like the Billy Mitchell does?
