Earning scholarship before school acceptance

My dd is competing on the first board for AROTC. She is also applying EA to all but one school. I believe the first board results will be released before EA decisions are announced (December). Since the Army matches a scholarship recipient with a school, how does this work? Will they award a scholarship pending college acceptance?

Thanks!

Yes, they will award pending college acceptance. In that case one accepts the scholarship and tries to transfer to another school later in the process. A transfer is almost always successful.

My DD did this exact thing. She earned scholarships to all three branches and was selected before early admissions decisions were made. She did let the school of her choice know she received a full scholarship (theough the rotc coordinator who spoke to admissions on her behalf) and it was weighed favorably with the admissions office. The rotc coordinator said It was one more thing as an applicant she was “bringing to the school” along with her other contributions as a good student, leader and recruited student athlete.

Wait for second board even third. Once you are boarded that's it. Plenty of time to boost SAT-ACT, add to resume, improve PT scores, and prep for interview.

Many students do not have an acceptance when the first board results come out.

My DD got a 4-year to the top 3 schools on her list from the first board. She applied EA to 2 of them. Found out she got in to one of those schools in mid-December.

I think you have 30 days once notified of being a winner to return the form from AROTC stating you will accept the scholarship to “x” school. Her thinking was if she didn’t get accepted EA to that school (Michigan as an OOS applicant is a reach), then she could easily transfer the scholarship.

There are some schools that you can leverage a scholarship for admission. There are a couple elite schools (<10% acceptance rate) out there that may be favorable to an applicant with a 4 year in hand, particularly if applying ED. The Ivies generally don’t give a hoot about the scholarship for admissions purposes, BTW.

My DS received his NROTC scholarship first board and was able to communicate that in his school specific essays. He made sure his 1st choice admissions officer was aware also. He was accepted into his 1st choice - not sure the scholarship in hand had anything to do with it as his other credentials were solid. His experience with Ivies, in particular Yale, was different than your description. Yale NROTC did give a hoot, as the unit called and emailed when he applied. They told him they wanted him and he did receive a Yale admissions acceptance. In the end, the unit even called to ask why he chose #1 choice over them. He chose another elite, non Ivy.

If you do receive a scholarship offer prior to school acceptance, make sure your admissions officer knows. Yes, it is stated that admissions to the school and receipt of a scholarship are separate and distinct, and in some cases that may be the case, but I find it difficult to believe that an admissions officer who knows an applicant who was already vetted by the military and has a scholarship in hand would disregard that when comparing like applications. Also considering they know financially full tuition will be covered by the military allowing school awarded grants to go to others. Whether it's considered or not, you really have nothing to lose in letting them know.

If your DD is selected as a winner, she will have to accept the scholarship within 30 days regardless of what school(s) are matched with the scholarship. In the end, she can request to transfer the scholarship to the school she ends up attending if she ends up not getting into the same school that is listed as her #1.

My only advice to her would be to hold off on declining admission to any universities until all of the scholarship paperwork is done with AROTC, particularly if she ends up having to transfer the scholarship.
