Electric bikes

I drive our Kubota diesel RTV 900 to church a lot of Sundays ā€¦ church is about 3 miles away over the mountain

It will do 25+ mph going downhill ā€¦ I have ā€œFarm Useā€ license plates on it ā€¦ you donā€™t pay personal property tax, no licensing required, no insurance required ā€¦ nothing ā€¦. Itā€™s legal to travel up to 20 miles on the Interstate highways ā€¦ State and local roads have No restrictions.

If you bring one to the Yard at Newport, you can help the maintenance crew in your spare time ā€¦ the bed has a hydraulic lift ā€¦ very convenient

is that you, @Dr. Strange Love ??

NO WAY!! You can drive it on the interstate???

I checked with the Annapolis Base Commander, and the attached is still allowed. You would need to have a helmet however.
Also might have a real shot at the USNA appointment with your solution vs the fast and loose interpretation of Mid Regs. Best not to blow it before you start. Reminds me of the ā€œprinter discussionā€ I had with my DD on move in day of regular college when she insisted way toooo hard that she NEEEEDED one. After promising that I would overnight her one if she found out when classes started that she really needed one, I never heard about it again!

Coincidentally, my firstie and his Napster classmate (and 2 other PS ā€œbrothersā€) are in Newport exploring Newport in a way the Napster grad never expected he would be doing 5 years ago! Canā€™t wait to hear the stories tomorrow!

.
I drive the little Kubota on local roads ā€¦ I wouldnā€™t drive it on the Interstate ā€¦ too hazardous ā€¦

ā€¦ but it is legal for an ordinary car or pickup with Farm Tags to drive up to 20 miles one way on the Interstate ā€¦ I donā€™t pay property taxes or fuel excise taxes on Farm Use equipment ā€¦ šŸ˜Ž

My State defines and regulates. E-bikes along a similar line to Maryland's. We have 3 types of E-bikes: Type1s for kids; Type 2s peddled with motor assistance, or ridden w/o pedaling, (driven) by the motor to speeds of up to 20mph max; Type 3s with a maximum "motor assisted" speed of up to 28 MPH, but require that the rider is pedaling whenever the motor is providing power assistance to the wheels.

OP's 75mph electric motorcycle and Type2 E-bikes would be ruled out at the USNA by their electric motor driven capability. Type3's with up to 28 mph motor assisttance to the rider's pedaling????....................."Sea Lawyering" would begin here I think.

I understand that the OPs Vision was,

And a Type3 usually looks something like this

OK, but slap a rack and some bags on this type 3 and anything within a 40 mile radius of USNA is within a 2.5 Hr EASY ride. A run to Whole Foods or really anywhere in Annapolis would be about 10-15 Mins each way; a shot into Baltimore 1.5 Hr or DC 2hrs. 750 watts and 120+ Ft Lbs torque make for as easy a ride as you want on a given day. Mine substitutes a carbon belt for a chain, smooth quiet and zero grease, I often ride it in long pants w/o greese stains.

I wouldn't show up with one on I-Day, or try to join the local Hells Angles chapter, but a good E-bike could really expand a Mid's liberty or local Annapolis access/options. If my DD were headed to the USNA today I would encourage her to inquire into storing a Type3 on campus for use during liberty Etc, in the same way and for the same purpose another Mid might store a conventonal bike for the same/similar applications. Hell, some cheaper, less powerful / more basic E-bikes are almost indistingushable from a Std. Bike.

Of course, when a mid gets fried for having an unauthorized motorized bike, they won't have any liberty for a really long time so they really won't need to get away from the yard.

Maybe you want to consider an electric scooter. There are a few MIDS with them on the yard. Need a helmet though.

I know some staff do. And these days, who knows what exceptions have been granted for mids. Or not, and they are just using them.

Best advice here is to report in, get through Plebe Summer, and find out what the policy is, as well as what is enforced.
