Elephant in the room...

What do the plebes typically have to do if Navy loses? And did they do it last night/today?

There’s nothing specific that the Plebe class as a whole has to do. But some Plebes make bets with upperclassmen that if Navy wins they’ll get something like a privilege or a collar device, but if Navy loses they usually have to so something embarrassing for a day like wear a weird uniform or shout something silly when squaring corners. Favorites from recent years include opening a lemonade stand outside the Mid Store, dressing up as a helicopter to classes while playing “Fortunate Sun” on loop, lifeguarding the fountain between the Chauvenet and Michelson buildings, and battling an imaginary dragon with a broomstick outside the library during peak academic traffic.

🤣
Vintage favorites from my tour there:
- Loudly declaiming well-known love poetry from the gazebo across from the Chapel during class changes (“How do I love thee? Let me count the ways...”)
- Wearing “full dress snorkel” and fins, “swimming” on a beach towel in T Court
- Any kind of super hero, either known or USNA-specific (“Yard Rat Man,” “Halsey Hack Woman”), with appropriate accessories and some kind of cape for flying around
- Being a mime and welcoming mids into King Hall for noon meal
- Having to do Chow Calls in Yoda-style verbal construction (made me laugh until the tears came)

it was Coach Ken's call. he decided to limit the risk of losing players if someone tested positive. it wasn't mandated. he thought it was the best way to get to the games without losing half the team. i suppose in hindsight he might be rethinking his plan, they looked so unprepared.

i guess we can call that a failed experiment

Did anyone get Covid? No? Then was it a failed experiment?

Interesting reads this morning, that both Colorado and Kansas high schools, who previous shut down football, have reversed their decisions. 3 weeks of high school football, and no increase in covid in states playing. Ours is.

So as time ticks on, new things are learned.

“That game was 1,000% my fault. Obviously, we weren’t prepared,” he said. “There’s no one to blame but myself. I erred on the side of trying to keep our guys safe and clearly that was a bad decision.”
“I made the decision to practice that way and it killed us. Football-wise, we weren’t ready,” Niumatalolo said. “In football, you have to be pad ready. One team was prepared very well. One team was playing football. They were, and we weren’t. I chose to block bags and tackle doughnuts.”

doesn't look like much of a success to me.

I only root for Navy when they are not playing Army so it was a hard game to watch...that said, Navy always has a strong team because they have excellent coaching. I'm pretty sure despite this loss Navy will have a winning season. As an Army fan I am not looking forward to the BYU game in 10 days. It's going to be an ugly loss for Army despite the home field advantage. BYU is big AND fast....

No disrespect to the Coaches or players but their pregame approach to preparation reminds me of Professor Harold Hill's "Think Method".

Miss Marian. The Think System is a revolutionary method, I'll admit. So was Galileo's conception of the Heavens, Columbus' conception of the egg - ah - globe, Bach's conception of the Well-Tempered Clavichord. Hmm? Now I cannot discuss these things here in public. But if you'll allow me to call –

Also from the "Music Man" with some editing: They got trouble right there in (Severn) River City.

Trouble, oh we got trouble,
Right here in (Severn) River City!
With a capital "T"
That rhymes with "P"
And that stands for Pool,
That stands for pool.
We've surely got trouble!
Right here in (Severn) River City,
Right here!
Gotta figger out a way
To keep the young ones (mids) moral after school!
Trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble...

Oklahoma? Michigan?

Army will be ready.

Navy football returns to full-contact practice after blowout loss to BYU

After a demoralizing 55-3 loss to BYU on Monday, Navy football coach Ken Niumatalolo blamed the listless performance on himself, having decided against significant contact during fall camp out of concerns about the spread of the coronavirus.

On Wednesday, Niumatalolo said Navy will go back to normal practice sessions with full contact during numerous drills and 11-on-11 scrimmages (more at link below)

My plebe has to recite the Romeo and Juliet balcony scene with a company mate... she’s Romeo and he’s Juliet. I sent her the cliff notes and demanded a video. We shall see but she was adamant... Never bet against Navy!

👀 didn’t seem this coming.

Question: when’s varsity athlete “enters the transfer portal”, have their already left USNA? Disenrolled?

Olsen wrote, “I have a lot left in the tank: 3 years of eligibility left and ready to continue chasing my dream."

He's a Youngster and hasn't signed his 2-for-7 commitment yet. He's free to go, like anyone else.
Apparently that "dream" didn't include being an officer in The Navy or Marine Corps. I don't understand it. If you want to play football and have some idea that you're good at it, why would you want to get into a service academy if football is all that you want to do?

Here’s some info on the NCAA transfer portal:

If he told them sometime after the game a week ago today, and submitted his request to voluntarily separate, it’s a matter of him going through the admin out-processing drill. That can happen fairly quickly. He stops going to class and practice and runs around with a checklist, clearing action items. Meanwhile, at some point, certain info will have been entered into the NCAA transfer portal to cover all the compliance bases, and those gears will start grinding. If it’s been a week, he may already be physically gone.

Yep, it’s a risky way to play your game. Reading the article also felt a little awkward....a little more ‘sharing’ than I’m used to! Maybe there’s more to it than not wanting to serve.

(also, head hung in shame at all my typos 🙄)

Well .... No guts, no glory — football ain’t blood, sweat, and tears any more .... It’s pocket passers, specialists, computer scientists, and machine learning ... and throw in a few political protests to boot.

My Redskins aren’t fashionable anymore .... “Skins” is just a faint memory to me, like soft music before you leave this world .... the Hogs, the Diesel, the Smurf’s, the Fun bunch .... all gone.

Apparently his dream is the NFL. I wish him the best of luck, but I am not seeing that kind of talent from that young man, then again maybe Navy wasn’t the right place for him to flourish. He is free to chase that dream, but not sure what D1 team he is going to land on. Malcolm Perry is in the NFL because of his athleticism, not because of his QB skills. I thought Olsen had the potential to be a great Navy QB but he is a system QB as are all Navy QBs in the option. Keenan is already out of the NFL. He never made a team roster full time outside of the practice squad. He was basically handed the starting role this year and squandered it. He is only a 3/C and is free to leave.
