I'm applying to the USAFA c/o 2024 as an enlisted Navy sailor. I'm unfamiliar with the process of applying as prior enlisted to a service academy that's not the same branch as one's enlistment. I understand that I'd complete the same application as a civilian student, but what needs to be done in regards to the Navy side? If accepted, would I have to be released from service by my chain of command? Thanks for any input.

The SAs will typically have someone dedicated to prior enlisted admissions, and they should not be surprised by other-service applicants, even if their focus is enlisted from their own service.

I would start with USAFA’s Admissions POC for enlisted, as well as your own chain of command, including the career counselor. No doubt about it, should you be successful, paperwork must be done!

I know you are not considering USNA at this time, but there is a senior enlisted advisor in Admissions there, and “asking the Chief” is never a bad choice if you get stumped on Navy-side process. You can simply call or email Admissions and ask for the enlisted advisor.

Be sure you allow for the likelihood of a year at prep school before actually reporting in, so that you are not over the age limit.

Thank you, I’ll definitely do that. In regards to the prep school/age limit, I’m only 18, have an associates degree and 74 completed credits at University of Alaska (3.9 College GPA, 3.7 high school GPA), 35 ACT and 1520 SAT. If the only reason for the prep school is to help students reach the academic standards of the academy, I’m not sure it would apply to me but I’ll be sure to account for the possibility. Thanks again!

Do you have a copy of AFI 36-2019 dated 25 May 18? If not, message me your contact info and I will get it to you. Specifically, paragraph 2.2.4. informs commanders of Navy personnel about the process for Regular or Reserve Navy members to apply to USAFA including how to get released from the Navy to attend.
