Error with Appointment

Hello Everyone,

I had received a call from my congressman office on Tuesday (3/15), saying that I had earned an appointment to the Air Force Academy, and that my decision would be in my portal later this week. I checked my portal yesterday, and the letter says that I was accepted into the prep-school (USAFAPS), but didn't obtain a direct appointment.......

I was very confused and stressed out, so I contacted my congressman office, and they had told me that USAFA had some error messages for people that go into the prep school. (pictures above will explain this better)

Although I am very grateful for the opportunity to go to the prep school, it is a bit disappointing and frustrating that less than 24 hours ago I thought I was going to go directly into the Class of 2026, and then this happened.

If anyone has an advice or knowledge about this please let me know.

Thank you.

That is terrible things got mixed up. It’s okay to be disappointed. A few days from now, dust yourself off and focus on the prep school. It’s an amazing opportunity that will make you more mature and prepared for when you do report to USAFA. The Air Force thinks you have something special, but need a small tune up on something to be prepared for USAFA. Embrace it and enjoy the ride.

I do feel for you. It's reasonable to be upset especially when you were told you received your goal. When you ready remember that'll you'll spend ten amazing months with amazing people working hard and going in with 2027 class. One year will make you even better.

Preppies do very well at the academy. Very disappointing about the misinformation, but in your rear view mirror, you will likely feel good about this alternative path. Congratulations - either way a huge achievement.

ETA...and agree with other posters - you have reason to feel disappointed, really unfortunate error. Hang in there.

There isn’t a downside to attending a prep offer, if the SA is your goal. Upon successful completion of the program, you are *almost* guaranteed a spot in the next class. You will enter with your group of classmates/friends…a built in support system. You will be valued by your new classmates as somone who knows the ropes a bit already. You will have mastered collegiate level classes and learned how to study and prioritize. You will have a year of growth and maturity under your belt. And you will be best set up for success at your SA.

No downside.

Congrats on your offer!! Many would be happy to share in your (hopefully brief) disappointment. I would suggest connecting with other prepsters (I think they are listed in the DIY appointment thread), I’m confident excitement will replace your disappointment.

I am sorry to hear about that but what matters is that you will get into USAFA (after your year at the prep school of course). My father was in your shoes as well and he did not regret his time as a preppie.

When I was at FVE, most of the 2d Lts who were out admissions advisors were Preppies who had just graduated with the Class of 2021. They were incredibly great people and represented the institution well, and talked at length how much they believed USAFAPS set them up for success. Good luck on your journey! I know you may have thought it would have been more direct, but I believe you will think this was for the better in the end.

Same EXACT thing happened with my daughter. She will very likely accept the prep school offer, but it does appear that the USAFA made a significant error by notifying congressional offices last week that their nominees received appointments, when in fact it was a prep school offer.

Wow crazy to see it has happened to multiple people! Yes major error on USAFA's part. Told all my friends and families about the exciting news, and then boom it was an offer to the prep school. Still very grateful for the offer though, but this mistake could have been avoided.

Hopefully both you and my DD will find prep school to be a rewarding experience and will both earn appointments to the AFA after one year in prep. Both of you still have much to be proud of. I hope you become friends in prep school!

Disappointing for sure, but I call appts to the Prep School the "Golden Ticket"

Preppies do very well at USAFA. They get time to learn about military standards/procedures. If you do really well in classes, you are sent "up the hill" to take classes with cadets. That gives you a huge leg up. Then once you get your appt, the "directs" will look to you for help! You and the prior enlisted will already know how to salute, make the beds, march, etc. You are given the opportunity to lead because you already know so much more than *most* of those out of high school.

So, that's a long way for me to say CONGRATULATIONS!

I had the same thing happen and it was a bit annoying but still an amazing thing and I can’t wait to be classmates with you. Also just realize this is better then being declined and we get the opportunity to grow more instead of getting thrown in the deepend.

I have said it before on SAF. Never met a preppie (KP) who regretted it, never met a direct admit who regretted having a preppie next door. Son in law was a preppie.

My son was awarded a Falcon Scholarship on 3/26/22 though his portal. However, he received an email today inviting him to the class of 2026 appointee in-person event. We decided to click it and it allowed him to register. His portal has not changed since Saturday. We called the phone number on the invitation but only got a machine. We have emailed his mentor ALO to see if she could find out more information. The roller coaster ride continues.... Did any other Falcon Scholars or Prep School students receive this same email? Not sure if this was another error with the admission's system.

Yes I received the same email and was also a little confused. I guess they just send it out to everyone that was awarded an appointment or a foundation scholarship. Please do post what the response is from your mentor ALO.
