For those who have written or are writing the personal statement for USNA application it says in a 300-500 word essay answer the following. I just want to make sure: does it mean 500 words to answer both questions or does it mean 500 words (max) for each question? I wrote it as 500 words total but if it's the latter I'm worried I didn't write enough. Thanks!

500 words for both questions. If you copied and pasted the essay into the essay box on the application, it would not let you submit it if it has more than 500 words total

Not sure if any of you have experienced this, but when I cut and paste my essay into the application it eliminates certain punctuations, like quotations, and replaces with upside down question marks. I tried changing the fonts to no avail. Anybody else notice this?

quotes themselves are problematic on the web. If it's only messing up the quotes themselves then I wouldn't worry about it. If it's messing up the contents of the quotes then it's a problem you should report as it's undoubtedly an error in their software... and a pretty common error at that. I can't begin to tell you how much web application coding I had to fix because it didn't handle quotes properly.

Yeah that happened to me as well. I just went in and changed each quotation mark manually after pasting it in the box.

"Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet."

There. I quoted Our Lord and Savior SecDef James N. Mattis just fine.

Many word processors replace quotes with "smart quotes" and utilize other characters outside of the 7-bit ASCII character set used by many of the online systems. Some may also add extra or eliminate new line characters. Please review your entries after you paste them into the web forms to make sure you don't have any ¿s or other errant characters. This is one of your first (of many) attention to detail tasks. ;)
