For Plebe Summer, Does my daughter need to submit 20/20 vision prescription?
She always feels dizzy with the full power. Would it need to be full 20/20 prescription?

Also, she is in the edge of -7.25. As she attends USNA and her prescription becomes worse (-8 or even higher than that), would she be okay?

Thanks

I would advise your daughter to submit her normal prescription, assuming it is strong enough for her to read the board in classrooms. She will have an optometry appointment during plebe summer and they will adjust her prescription if necessary.

Your daughter will get refractive eye surgery after she signs her commitment at the start of 2/C year. She will most likely get LASIK. I'm not a optometrist, but I know they tend to give people with prescriptions worse than -5.00 LASIK over PRK. I got LASIK last fall.

This is not an absolute statement. One can opt in, particularly if they’re aiming for aviation. Vision correction is made available to all mids. But it’s not required.

@Temple17, I believe you’re a current mid. Has the policy changed?

You are correct that it is NOT required, however almost everyone who qualifies opts-into receiving the surgery.

It may be required depending on the community you want to go into. Like mentioned above, if @Musicedu21 wanted to fly, they would have to get refractive eye surgery with a prescription of -7.25.

Oh, thank you so much for the information. So just to clarify, for any reason (let say she feels dizzy or the power is too strong) if she doesn't feel comfortable, they will adjust her prescription during plebe summer right?

Also, so good to hear that she will be able to get lasik surgery!

If there are any urgent issues with her prescription, she can ask a detailer to take her to optometry. There will also be an assigned day during the summer where her whole company will go to optometry. So, the answer to your question is yes as long as she speaks up if she has any legitimate problems.

In my experience, I had a lot of problems with my issued glasses for the first two days of plebe summer (dizziness & sensitivity to light), but after a few days my eyes quickly got used to them.

The issued glasses are commonly referred to as Birth Control Glasses or BCGs, because they are ugly. It always makes me laugh when I look back to my plebe summer photos wearing my BCGs. After plebe summer, she will be able to wear her personal glasses or contacts.

With eyes as bad as your daughter's, I would recommend buying some prescription googles. She will struggle to see the instructors when she is in the pool.

I bought something like this & found it helpful: https://www.amazon.com/Speedo-Vanqu...ds=prescription+goggles&qid=1620011132&sr=8-6

I appreciate your reply. Thank you! And I will get the googles right away!

@Temple17 thanks for the info. To confirm, if a plebe arrives on I-day with prescription goggles they will be able to keep these and use them for sports/swimming during plebe summer (rather than storing them with other personal effects)?

Yes, they will be able to keep the googles with them over plebe summer.

How does this work logistically?
When you arrive at Alumni Hall on I-Day the detailers will take your backpack, with all of your personal items, away from you.

When you get to Bancroft you will have a couple minutes to grab anything that you are allowed to have from your backpack. This could include the following items: a wallet, cleats, prescription googles, running shoes, compression shorts, etc.
