WASHINGTON (AP) — A Coast Guard lieutenant who was arrested last week is a “domestic terrorist” who drafted an email discussing biological attacks and had what appeared to be a hit list that included prominent Democrats and media figures, prosecutors said in court papers.

Christopher Paul Hasson is due to appear Thursday in federal court in Maryland after his arrest on gun and drug offenses, but prosecutors say those charges are the “proverbial tip of the iceberg.”

“The defendant is a domestic terrorist, bent on committing acts dangerous to human life that are intended to affect governmental conduct,” prosecutors wrote in court papers .

Kudos to the agents that caught this guy, if he had any associates I hope they find the rocks they're hiding under.

I would imagine that if anyone does know this guy, they won't want to advertise it on a public forum. This investigation will probably run very deep.

Maybe someone knew him from school or served with him.

Saying you knew him isn’t a crime - unless you are a co-conspirator.

What a bizarre story.

A couple of points I saw:

"In September 2017, Hasson sent himself a draft letter that he had written to a neo-Nazi leader and “identified himself as a White Nationalist for over 30 years and advocated for ‘focused violence’ in order to establish a white homeland,”"

"Hasson also expressed admiration for Russia. “Looking to Russia with hopeful eyes or any land that despises the west’s liberalism,” he wrote in the draft email. Prosecutors say during the past two years he had regularly searched online for pro-Russian as well as neo-Nazi literature."

"Hasson appeared to be a chronic user of the opioid painkiller Tramadol and had purchased a flask filled with four ounces of “synthetic urine” online"

And this (emphasis mine)--> "Hasson, who works at the Coast Guard’s headquarters in Washington" Seriously??

Hit list of Democratic figures notwithstanding, the guy sounds like more of a lunatic than anything else.

Lmao I’m assuming synthetic urine is to fool drug testing and not for mixed drinks.

With this guy, who knows?

Tramadol addiction is an interesting twist to this story, though. Particularly the psychiatric side effects.

I've had the displeasure to come across a few hardcore racists in the service, and every one to a 'T' had trouble resisting the urge to weave that narrative into almost everything they said. I'm shocked he made it this far, and at HHQ nonetheless. WTH.

As an Acquisitions Officer for NSCAP, being stationed at a CG District Office or Headquarters would be a normal assignment. If he kept his personal views to himself even with an occasional slip of the tongue, it wouldn't be that difficult to fly just under the radar. It seems from the investigation that included cooperation from the CG that he was starting to raise larger red flags and the narrative he weaved his views into began to cross the line.

It will be interesting to see more information as the investigation continues though I have a feeling things will be held close to the vest for a while. It would be interesting to know why he left both the Marines and the National Guard and what those branches knew about him.

I agree, reading the detention memo it's clear this guy was a lunatic, whether he would ever have the resources to carry out his grander plans is one thing, but the fact he had the large weapons cache seems like he was dead set on doing as much harm as he could with what he had. The Tramadol addiction could have precipitated those plans.

Looks like he spent 4 years in the Marines from 1988 to 1993, then 2 years active in the Army Reserve. Seems pretty old to be a Lieutenant in the CG. Looks like his crime was possession of a firearm by an unlawful user of a controlled substance. Everything else in that motion seems like just his paranoia and fantasy of a mentally deranged person. He's been on their radar since 2017....why did they wait this long to arrest him? Why February of 2019?

I agree that he’s a nut. He also has an interesting last name.

In Virginia and several other states, the number of firearms and ammo in the photo is not alarming or illegal.

His interest in a biological attack lends further to his delusions. The successful execution of a biological attack of significance is near impossible.

Several screws loose with this one. His weapons and ammo, I know plenty who has that amount, unfortunately this will add to the fight to disarming the public.

Excellent points. I had only scanned the article in the OP. Thanks for adding those additional details.

What do you mean he has an interesting last name?

Yep, Irish. No dubious intent on my part thinking he has an interesting name.

Hasson History, Family Crest & Coats of Arms

The Gaelic name used by the Hasson family in ancient Ireland was O hOsain, which is possibly derived from the word "os," which means deer.
Early Origins of the Hasson family
The surname Hasson was first found in County Londonderry (Irish: Doire), a Northern Irish county also known as Derry, in the province of Ulster, where the surname is still the found today.

It's similar to "Hasan". As in this POS.

I don't know what you're reaching for here, but his first name is Christopher. That first part would be "Christ".
Reading that motion, I'm thinking its a far stretch to charge this guy with domestic terrorism. Obviously he's nuttier than squirrel droppings, but that isn't a crime. I really didn't see that he made any plausible threats to anyone, but they probably would like to keep him incarcerated, do a psych evaluation, and take his guns away. All of which, I think is probably a good idea. This is only a story because he's in the CG.

yep, Maryland has the red flag law where they can take his firearms even if he has committed no crime.

Either he is stupid or wanted to get caught. His highest crime so far is goofing off on government time on a government computer.

The amount of weapons shown in the possession of a stable everyday citizen is of little concern and not alarming in my opinion.

That amount in the possession of a lunatic with a manifesto, that's another story.
