Is a midshipman allowed to have a folding bike at the academy? A bike like the Brompton folding bike to move around the academy? Is a midshipman allowed to have any other bike? Is there place to store it?

A lot of bikes stored on the Yard — folding or otherwise. They go in “lockers” below Bancroft Hall. You won’t see mids riding to and from class — I believe that would be unbecoming — but they do ride for fitness or pleasure, on and off the Yard. That’s what DD did during Covid, doing laps around the Yard.

My kid picked up a bike from home this semester to get to and from his grandparent's place (my parents) in Annapolis. He said there are large rooms for storing them.

Be sure to have a helmet.

Plebes have to be in uniform when they leave the yard. But they cant ride a bicycle unless they are in PT gear. So, not very useful in plebe year.

You might want to check a little further on this answer. . . I'm known a lot of plebes who did long runs outside of the yard and there is always going to/from the Naval Station.

I’d have to go and check MidRegs - plenty of changes with DepDant Dave Forman over the last year - but there are guidelines for PT-only excursions to go off-Yard and what can be worn in terms of PT gear, not to mix a run or bike ride with a leisurely stop by ChickFilA or Starbucks - which is a liberty activity requiring the appropriate uniform per class year and time.
