Hey everyone, I have a principal nom and am 3Qed. Which will result in an appointment at some random time in the future. However, I am currently taking a gap year and will be traveling (not in the US). I know there will be lots of paperwork and a signing ceremony after the appointments are out, just want to ask about what all the paperwork will be asking for and can they be done electronically outside of the US. Thanks a lot y'all.

Probably a fair question for Admissions.

Uhhhh... I'd also ask them about a gap year. If you're just completing your gap year, no problem, but appointments are for a particular class and not some random future class.

I think the OP is currently on the gap year.

There will be a tremendous amount of paperwork. Most can be done from any location. Some may require you to be physically present, such as criminal records check and that will depend on the individual agencies. If you have lived/worked in multiple locations, you will need a records check from several agencies. Some can be done online, some can be done by a parent, and some will require you to be there in person.

Your RC is the best source of guidance if you run into difficulties.

To clarify, I am currently taking a gap year... Decided to take a one year break instead of a 6 day one between HS and CBT

Also hope that you take time to get ready for the physical aspect of Beast, as well as plebe year. It will be overwhelming if you are not prepared. I’m not doubting your ability to handle it but just want to give you a little friendly reminder.

There’s no signing ceremony. If there is, then it’s truly ceremonial for the cameras and newspaper.

There will be a lot of paperwork. Almost all can be done electronically.

The one that my DD couldn’t do from home was fingerprinting. We lived near a military base so she went there and got fingerprinted. The army base used the electronic system so it got to West Point same day. It beat getting ink on her fingers and trying to get good prints on the paper. Using the old way risked the fingerprinting not being acceptable and having to re-do. The new electronic system will tell the person who is doing the fingerprinting that it’s good or not as it’s being done. Pretty slick.

The other one was the police record check. I recall you had to do one for each jurisdiction you live, work, go to school, etc. The exact requirement in terms of which jurisdiction you needed to get one from was confusing. Nevertheless, my DD had to take the form to the local police department for them to complete. I suppose that could have been done via emails though.

No signing ceremony and no need to attend the event with your congressman or your local USMA parents club...nice to do but not necessary.
The paperwork will come out in waves. A lot of it is done on line. The big one is the eQIP for the security clearance--and that takes a lot of concentration and quiet but the woman who sends the email whose name I won't share here, is accessible, supportive, and easy to work with. You will need to be finger printed as part of the process.
The last little bits like dental x-rays (you will need a panx) and your vaccination record--do not take very long at all.
The police record check, you can call and then walk into your local/home police station. It does not take long at all.
Really, it comes out in bits and you have plenty of time to complete it.
After you are appointed, if you are going to disappear to Bhutan or do the Everest Base Camp trek for four weeks in April, which would be ideal climbing season, you would want to let your admissions officer know--"Hello, I will be travelling from xx April to Xx May". The reality is, it just needs to be done by R-Day.

Although really, the eQUIP, you will want to do that as soon as you can and not leave Mrs. D waiting.
