Hi, my DS was offered to go to a foundation school for a year. Anyone else on here also received that offer or did a year at a prep school before getting into the Academy? We got a list of schools to chose from but we don’t really know much about any of them. Would be great to hear from others who have experienced it or make connection with other families going through it. Thanks.

My DS was offered Foundation and Civilian Prep last year due to an ACL injury. We met with Captain Hughes and thoroughly discussed his option with Foundation. However DS decided on a year at a civilian prep school. Both are great options. We are waiting on the appointment now…
Feel free to DM me.

DS should pore over the prep partner websites, organize his questions, including cost share after scholarship applied, and get on the phone with the staff who oversee the SA prep program and develop his comparison spreadsheet. He can also call the USNA Foundation staff. They are ever-patient and understanding, completely dedicated to helping Foundation Scholars.

Your DS has been given a superb opportunity - commonly referred to as a golden ticket - because if he successfully completes prep, stays qualifed in all areas and obtains a nomination(s) next cycle, he is almost sure to be offers an appointment. USNA is essentially telling him “we like what we see, think you would benefit from a year of prep, and we’ll save a seat for you and wait for you to join Class of 2027.”

If he wants USNA, he should grab this and not look back. He will gain confidence and maturity in the time away from home and be laser-focused and well-prepared for USNA.

There are many successful prepsters in each incoming USNA class.

Oh thank you . I will DM you if I have questions ( and if I can figure out how to DM on here 😂). May I ask which school he is at? I think we will go the civilian route too just because he would like the opportunity to keep playing hockey through out the school year, and only a handful of schools offer it.

Thank you, we did meet with Captain Hugues yesterday which was very helpful and cleared things up a bit. My son will definitely accept the offer… we just need to pick which school he will attend.

See post below, @Physicsguru is on teaching staff at MMI, with many great posts.

Thank you. That school looks great, and the price is way reasonable compare to some other prep schools… but unfortunately it doesn’t offer hockey, which he wishes to keep up with during this coming year, so it’s not one of his top choice as of now. We will keep it in mind though and will talk to my DS about it.

As for costs, keep in mind that it‘s based on parental resources. As a general rule, the school discounts tuition to cover 1/3, Foundation kicks in 1/3 and parents pay 1/3. Obviously, affluent parents are expected to pay more and less affluent pay less. Cost to parents is almost certain to be less than the cost of a year at most colleges.

The only downside for NAPS is your kid my be brainwashed into singing "sweet caroline" during the 7th inning stretch of a Red Sox game. For a yankees fan, that was tough to take..
