Freaking Out

I think DevilDog simply has the incorrect term in use, which occurs frequently on forums. I believe he is talking about a supe nom. The bottom line is that his son has an LOA from Navy and someone from Navy told them not to worry about the nom. Frankly, it doesn't matter what term was used - the Navy will typically honor their LOA and provide a supe nom if the candidate is not able to obtain one. There are people who do not get a nom and for whom Navy does not provide a supe nom. However, in this case, the candidate has been told that they'll get him a supe nom if he doesn't get one from another source. I am sure DevilDogs son will/has applied for all noms for which he is eligible and likely will receive a MOC nom. However, if he does not - the supe nom will likely be provided for him.

2011 you are very cool. Thank you for everything.

That is the "Pro Forma" behavior by USNA that is getting them looked at hard this year by many members of congress. While there may or may not be certain reasons or goals behind this behavior, it has gotten to the point that it is becoming political. It seems that there are members who are asking some tough questions about midshipmen getting appointed while they have people in their districts who are better qualified and not getting appointed. I like to refer to it as congressional jealousy at its best. Regardless of what we may or may not think of our MOC, they do like to protect their constituents in their districts. I would be very surprised if USNA did not watch that a little closer this year so that they do not cross that line of scrutiny. As a result, I would highly encourage seeking all nominations available.

That may be true...and from the looks of it, I would say it is. Just be mindful that there are only 50 such nominations for the entire country.

You’re not bad yourself. I do like your forum name! :thumb: I just do not want to see anyone get disappointed because they wer told something. Seen that happen too many times in the course of my life time.

My hero is Chesty Puller. Can 50 year olds have heroes?

Yes. I like Chesty too. I have actually been to his grave site once.

I was there in July. Took my wife and sons there to pay our respect to the man I consider the greatest General this country has ever produced.

I believe the problem with this situation lies with the Academy representative - He may have been out-of-line by "guaranteeing" DevilDog's son a nomination. Is that really the proper method used by the Naval Academy? But one can't fault DevilDog for believing that his son is "official" as he was told that fact in person by the representative. Why wouldn't he believe the person who is at his house representing the Academy?? Maybe DevilDog's approach to this situation may be different than yours or mine but his approach is based on what he was told by the rep.

I know this may sound cliche but as the saying goes "In life, there are no guarantees." Although I have received an LOA, my parents keep saying "If you get an appointment" instead of "When you get an appointment" because nothing is official as of yet (even though my BGO also made the "scrounging around" comment that someone posted above). It was like when we sold our house a few years ago - My parents accepted the offer in May but the closing wasn't until August. My mom did not breathe a "sigh of relief" until the actual closing day when the papers were signed by all who were involved - only then did she believe that it was "official".

Amen to what you just said Berkeley (you are very wise).

When the RD told my son he was getting an LoA, my son's question to him was what happens if he didn't get the MOC nom (we are from one of the very competitive states). His comment back was basically not to worry that my son would most likely get an MOC nom, and if he didn't he had no doubts that my son would be there next summer at Annapolis (i.e. a nom would be found). My son also heard the same thing from one of the BGO coordinators in our area. Even after hearing this we still are not going to sit back and breathe a sigh of relief until the appointment is in hand (not to mention any other thing that can happen between now and July1---didn't Marciemi mention something about bubble wrap:shake:)

opposite side

My child was told by her USNA admission contact that she MUSTapply in NAPS for ALL nomination sources. The letter that accompanined her certificate of appointment clearly stated that a eventual appointment to USNA is CONTINGENT on Passing NAPS courses with acceptable grades and a recommendation from the Dean. She would NEED a nomination and it clearly/directly stated that the Secretary of the Navy IS NOT a guarenteed nomination nor is the Sup. of the Academy for the competativeness of those nominations.

We are playing it safe and are applying to All sources and I actually have a thread out there on the JROTC nomination.
Does anyone know if she can use that in 2011 if she graduates this year (2010)?
Her colonel said he would gladly resubmit the paperwork and do what is necessary for next year.

Thanks Folks!

NAPS students must apply for MOC noms while they are students at NAPS. Noms are good only for the year in which they are made; thus, someone who applied this year will need to reapply next year.

As a general rule, a NAPS student who successfully completes NAPS, remains otherwise qualified (i.e., medically) and wants to attend USNA will receive an appointment -- typically from SecNav is the candidate doesn't get another nom. Same is true for Foundation. While a NAPS/Foundation offer sounds like an LOA, the two processes are not the same.
