I am an AS200 in AFROTC and I want to get out of my scholarship contract. I received an HSSP Type 1 scholarship and have now decided I don't want to be in the military. While in college, I have developed seborrheic dermatitis (eczema) which I believe is medically disqualifying. I sent paperwork from a dermatologist to DODMERB, and my NCO doesn't really know what to do.

Also, I am currently on MRS for PRK surgery.

1. If I don't get medically DQ'd , what are my options to get out of my contract?
2. Is sebhorreic dermatitis good enough to medically DQ me?
3. If I get med DQ, and don't fight for a waiver, do I still have to pay back my scholarship?

Would seem that eczema would get you Dq'd as it does everyone else. In terms of money, I believe that if Rotc kicks you out for something you cant control as in medical, you shouldnt have to pay it back. If you leave Rotc, then it is on you. Since this would be a little of both, medical and wanting to leave, I think the tie goes to medical and you should be able to leave debt free. How it actually works, I have no idea. You are lucky your are in AFROTC, they seems to be more strick on medical conditions compared to ARotc

Not recommended to ask questions like this in a public forum. You will usually get a bunch of subjective opinion. Especially when clear instructions exist for both questions. The instructions govern, not internet postings.

AFI 36-2011, Para. 2.4

DODI 6130.03, Para 5.2.1

Answers:
1. Read the AFI. You can (a) breach contract, or (b) decline a commission after your 4th year
2. Seborrheic dermatitis is dandruff, Cadet. Dandruff is not a DQ. If it were, we would have nobody in the military.
3. Read the AFI

If you want out, tell your cadre. You will either incur a recoupment cost or be ordered to enlist Active Duty. AF/A1P decides which.

Sure you want out? 4 years is a short time, even if you're crabby about it, and the pay is pretty good. That time may even be less if you can keep it together-- check out Para. 4.3.4.

It kind of sounds like you are trying to find a way out without paying back 2 yrs of the scholarship, books and stipend.

Seborrheic dermatitis typically is also known to be tied to a fungal infection, oily skin, etc. which is not uncommon for teenagers living in a dorm.
My guess is that DoDMERB may request a second using their own DODMERB docs to make an AF determination.
Eczema is an issue because their immune system maybe weakened and have a negative impact when it comes to certain shot requirements for deployments.

To answer your 3 questions.
1. No DQ and you walk than they have the right to either enlist you or make you payback the tuition, stipend and book allowances.
~ Beware bc in a few short weeks you will need to register for your fall term. Can you afford to attend this school?
2. Seborrheic dermatitis as I stated above is not like eczema. I have no true answer since I am not a doc., but my opinion is NOPE.
3. Unless something has changed, if you get DQd it is not up to you to fight for a waiver. The commissioning source will submit that paperwork. Now, if HQ AFROTC comes back with a denial for a waiver than they will release you, and unlikely you have to pay a dime. However, it is not up to you regarding the waiver process.
~ Personally, I am with tbpxece. Your condition is nowhere comparable to eczema.

Good luck
