Going to Visit USCGA

My daughter, currently a senior in high school, received her appointment to the scholars appointment on Friday. She has known she wanted to attend the academy since she was in the 9th grade.

My suggestion would be to spend as much time on the campus visiting with the cadets as possible. Chat up anyone who is willing to chat. Sophie's SAT scores were a bit low and her GPA wasn't what she had hoped for but she is a pretty decent sailor with and the coach was very helpful in the process.

I would have to say that if there is an opportunity for an interview it is incredibly helpful.

As for dinner, there are a number of restaurants in New London, on Sunday we went up and had lunch in the Dry Dock Snack Bar in celebration :)
Michelle Moore: PM me, if you can figure it out. I've given up. Again. I have a bunch of advice I PM'd another CGAS 2020 parent.

If you want to PM, there are two quick ways. One, select the users name next to their post and click on it. A profile screen will appear and you can select "start a conversation" there. If you can't find that, scroll to the top right of the page and hover over your inbox and click on "start a new private conversation". On the next screen start typing the users name in the "participants" box and a list of users will appear (Looks like this way works for contacting Michelle Moore). Hope this helps!

Hello,
New to the forum but been part of the search pool of parents supporting their kids with ambitions to attend a service academy or go the ROTC route.

What happens on the visit? My dd was invited by a coach. We are traveling from half away across the Unites States and have limited time for the visit.

Any help would be great. What specific things would you ask about? Do you suggest to apply for summer program?

I was looking over the thread for 19s incoming class. Wow what an impressive incoming class. It makes me nervous for my daughter. I sometimes doubt if I supported the kids in the right way to be competitive. Did I give them the right advice when she was forming the history for the resume? IMO, or at least I thought it was a good opinion I see her as being very well rounded. Her grades are decent but she is not in the top 10%. 1st SATs were ok but will retake to improve. ACTs she will take during the summer. She has great ECs with top leadership roles. Countless community service hours. No problems for recommendations. How are each of these things weighted from important to least important? What were the lows on test scores and gpas?

The most important question...Where do you suggest to have a great dinner?

We have traveled to USCGA several times over the years with my two sons and have tried a lot of local places throughout the surrounding cities. The best BY FAR is the Daniel Packer Inn. It is on on the waterfront in a 1700's colonial inn. Great Atmosphere, outstanding seafood (fresh each day), full of history and great for lunch and dinner! Enjoy your trip and visiting the academy. Competition is extremely high, but going through the experience - with a yes or no - is worth it. You will find, that no matter what you child does to get in, there will always be another who did or did not get in with better or worse scores, ECs, or leadership. It is really hard to compare because they are filling out a well rounded class. Striving to be the best in everything, is a great start, but still no guarantee for admittance. Good Luck!

If you are visiting you should go to the Submarine Force Museum. It's an amazing place. Much better than the Mystic Seaport in my (admittedly biased) opinion.

Note that the sub museum has a weird schedule.... it's closed during the week, but I can't remember when.... maybe Monday or Tuesday or Friday. Not sure, just take a look.

Thank you everyone for being so very friendly and giving us great advice. Dd got an email with her schedule of activities today. I won't be able to talk to her until she comes home from practice today...I can't wait to see her expression and the plans.
