If my incoming plebe already has insurance that meets the requirements of USMMA would you still recommend replacing it with the USMMA sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan to make sure everything (international, etc.) is covered? Is it a good plan?

Check out the company closely. We had trouble with the first recommended insurer. It was later replaced with another company with which we had no interaction. If you have a family plan through work or can afford two plans, consider it. Remember, if you're paying the piper, insist on picking the tune.

My concern with your own carrier would be what happens in the event of an injury while in the sea year and in some remote foreign country.
I've had a couple instances where cadets were injured onboard my ship. The injuries were nothing serious, but they did required medical attention beyond what we could provide onboard. When we got into port I simply filled out a 'masters certificate' and arranged with the agent for them to be taken up to the doctor. All the costs were covered by the company. If they had been hurt ashore the company would still have covered their medical expenses; and if the injury had been serious enough to require repatriation, that cost would have been picked up too.

thank you for that information!

As the engine cadet with Matson Lines, I gashed my head in the bilges. Got taken to Long Beach Memorial Hospital for stitches and treatment. Matson Lines picked up the tab.
not so grateful for this thought to now float in my head about DSo_O😆

Not so bad now that cadets can communicate with loved ones back home on a daily basis on most ships. Back in the day when my 2013 son was at sea, I got to experience tracking his ship through 20-30 foot seas and being stuck in the Panama Canal during violent uprisings. Our only contact was when the captain let him use the sat phone for a five- minute call on Christmas Day.

And then three score and a few years ago we had to mail a letter home.

Yup. I remember during my Sea Year only making a couple of phone calls from the Far East. During my time at sea post graduation, I rarely called home.

to be honest, there were lots of activities that one doesn't share with his parents. . . .
Especially if those 'activities' happened during 'sea year' in places like downtown Olongapo or up on Texas Street in Busan..

Um, um . . . what are you speaking of? hehehehe. To be honest, spent very little time in Olongapo. A hell of a lot more time in Manila, including one visit where the ship was arrested because the company defaulted. . . .

States Lines.. It was a sad day when that company went bust.. Clinging to moving breakbulk cargo when other company's were beginning the shift to containers was not a sound decision financially.

The parents are all up in the kids business these days. Sometimes good and sometimes bad. Cookie Cafe, birthday cakes delivered to Delano, Even ringing the bell when you passed licenses has gotten hijacked by parents where its now become a ceremony which is livestreamed for parents rather than just running up to it and ringing the crap out of it once you found out your FWE.

Ringing the bell after passing license is a nice tradition. Back when my son was at KP the bell ringing was very much informal and there was no ceremony. As a matter of fact, neither my son or I have any pictures of him ringing the bell. He got his test results and just ran out and rang it. That was it.. FWE and put it on the jacking gear!
;)
