Hello everyone,

Currently I have a fellow Cadet who also received an AFROTC scholarship. However, since they have been isolated pretty much all year because of their parents medical conditions, they no longer meet Air Force height/weight standards but they can still pass the PT test with flying colors. I personally think most of the extra weight is muscle since they’ve been really into lifting weights this summer. Aesthetically, it’s very obvious they are not obese.

I told them I don’t think they should worry too much because even though I met DODMERB standards when I was applying for USAFA, the Air Force made me go get body fat percentage check at my doctor which I had to submit to USAFA. I was cleared by USAFA and then later received an appointment. I feel like they would do the same thing for AFROTC scholarships, am I correct in this?

I received an AROTC scholarship. I thought I had passed my medical exam with flying colors, but I was flagged for being underweight. I had to go to my family doctor, and she ran bloodwork proving that I didn’t have any underlying disorders. She wrote a letter with the test results and explained that I’ve always been underweight but have followed the growth curve. I would post this in the DODMERB forum. Mr. Mullen was quick to respond and super helpful.

The only thing is, they were cleared by DODMERB, so that’s not the issue. In AFROTC, how I understand it, you’re measured every semester for height/weight along with your PT test. So if you don’t maintain the Air Force’s height/weight standards you can’t receive a scholarship, no matter how well you do on the PT test.

It’s also my understanding, not necessarily fact, that it’s a different process for being overweight than underweight. However I’ll take your suggestion and post it there too just to be sure.

I can only speak to NROTC, but if you don't make weight, then you get taped for measurements. If you meet those, then you are ok.

For ALL Service Academies and ROTC programs....DODMERB does one of 2 things with Ht/Wt:

1. You MEET the respective Service standards and it is a non-issue.
2. You DON'T meet the respective Service standards and DoDMERB notifies the respective programs, where the applicant applied. That is just for accession. The Service Academies and ROTC programs will do what they want from there forward after arrival.

DoDMERB will ONLY DQ for any associated MEDICAL conditions with excess height and weight...not for being outside of Ht/Wt standards. :wiggle:

gibsontrio =Correct. Which proves my point: "You DON'T meet the respective Service standards and DoDMERB notifies the respective programs, where the applicant applied. That is just for accession.
