Both DS's coming home for Christmas plus an Army colleague.

I'm specifically looking for a game or two to get as presents that we can play. All three plus Math Major DW are smarter than I, so I'm looking for something more challenging than UNO or Pictionary.

All suggestions are appreciated!

Our family LOVES games. I made an account after lurking on this forum for 5 months JUST BECAUSE OF THIS POST!

Also - we loved your "Tom Brady" post! We laughed a LONG time. Go Packers!

To address the question...

If you want fast satisfying, yet will fuel competition:
FLASH (its a dice game)
tenzi (dice game)
Blink (card game)
qwixx (dice game, math/strategy)
Dragonwood (appeals to kids - card game)

For "wordy" people:
Bananagrams
Scrabble (of course)
Dixit (fun and weird - can be an "inside knowledge" type of game)

For Strategy:
Catan (and any of its add ons, but Cities and Knights is the best, after that Explorers and Pirates)
Paladins (very complex)
Axis and Allies
Risk
Rebellion
Sheriff of Nottingham (bluffing game)

Could be Strategy:
Splendor
King of Tokyo

Cooperate against the game:
Pandemic (this is the original)
Pandemic Iberia (we like this one best)
Pandemic Fall of Rome (fun, but a little outside the original process)

physical coordination:
Ice cool

spacial reasoning:
blokus

Enjoy your family time!

Catan and Ticket to Ride are popular board games with our crew. A good Escape Room can also be a fun group exercise. I just ordered Trekking the National Parks as a new game option over the holidays and gifted Pandemic after researching recommendations for those with a Math/Econ focus.

Yep, my family loves Blokus! We play it all the time.

Some other good ones are a poker set, Apples to Apples, and Pie Face. The last two are a little ridiculous, but can be a lot of fun with the right group. I've also heard good things about the game Exploding Kittens, and Twister's always a good go-to as long as you don't mind laughing at yourself.

Good luck, hope you find some good games! Let us know if you find any that are a real hit!

Exploding Kittens is fantastic. All my kids and their friends love this game.

I was just going to post Exploding Kittens but you all beat me to it. We also love Anomia and Super Fight.

Telestrations is the bomb. I am a terrible artist and yet can communicate via my primitive cave drawings, whereas my wife makes lovely pictures that inevitably lead everyone astray. Also good for trash talking (eg putting your younger brother in every drawing doing something wrong and/or stupid -- "The word was ice cream" "Yes, and here's John eating out of the carton with a spoon.")

If it's going to be a barracks-level environment you could also consider Cards Against Humanity. It's not a family game in any respect, but in the right company it can be a riot.

Hurt your brain - search for “Mensa Select Board Games.” Mensa also has a virtual game site.
Qwirkle. Good for those who can see patterns, think strategically. Absurdly simple.

We love Qwirkle! Also Whoonu is very fun and fast-paced for all ages. Lots of banter about likes and dislikes.

We love Qwirkle too.
Another fun one, is called The Game. It's a cooperative card game with all the players, to try and get rid of all the cards 1-100 in the deck.
A ridiculous game that we came across just recently is throw, throw burrito. (I believe it's by the makers of exploding kittens). It really can get people out of their seats and running around the house.

Back in the day, my mother-in-law, very much a lady with ne’er a curse word to pass her lips, would rally the family to card games over the holidays. She had an inner card shark, and her favorite was Oh He!! or Oh Shi*! It has some other names. That’s a lively little card game, easily learned. Card tables would be set up, though nothing was allowed to disturb the puzzle table. Drinks would be happening (she liked her Bailey’s).
