hello everyone! unfortunately, I didn't get selected for the class of 2022 and I'm looking at my options. I had thought about going to NWP but I recently got accepted into MMI. I did not get an AOG scholarship and when I reached out to my RC, no valuable response on why my application was not taken. I am looking for some guidance on my situation. Here is a little about me.

1250 SAT, 2 years hockey team captain with the W on championships, some community service, pretty good physical shape (9 pull ups, 5;23 mile), full IB diploma.

Which is better in my case? any response would be amazing! thank you!

My daughter self prepped at NWP and loved it. She got applied to all academies and she will be usma class of 2022. Can’t say enough good things about NWP and the Durbeck’s!
Her weak link was her act and I think between act and sat they took 7 exams. The bonus is we got to have her home for the spring her at our local university!

Your SAT could be better. It’s not you score, rather your competitors are likely to have better scores.

Should consider doing ROTC,if you have an option to do ROTC at a a college you got accepted into.

I am not a big fan of self prep as if you don’t get into a SA, you have to find a college that will accept transfer credits from a junior military college. Also, I think the value of self prep are possibly improved SAT/ACT and introducing you to a military academy life style (this only helps if you get into a SA, not necessarily helps you get in). Of course, should help you become more mature.

MMI has a solid track record for self sponsored candidates gaining admission into one of the service academys. Great overall option but I have heard similar feedback on NMMI and NWP. My 2018 cadet will graduate with a self prep from MMI. Best of luck!

My RC put a great amount of emphasis on taking the ACT and doing well, and retaking the SAT. In general, your composite score will only increase each time you take the SAT, and I ended up taking it three times to get to a score that my RC was happy with. My recommendation would be to study hard for those and keep retaking them to get a higher composite - everything else you have seems to be competitive. If USMA is your goal, reapply next year!

Agree with above. Improve your SAT, Work on leadership opportunities. 9 pullups is pretty good but I'm only impressed when it gets near 20. Don't know about the army.

You don't mention your GPA or class placement, both of which may also have hindered you... but since you didn't mention it I cannot truly say.

Sounds like some decent credentials...but to caveat off some other responses, your standardized test indeed could be better. Many applicants are in upwards of 1400 for the SAT and 28 for the ACT. Class rank/GPA are also important in the admissions process, but since you claim to have a full IB diploma and a decent SAT, I'll assume that you're not struggling in that aspect. The only issues I can think of is that your personal statements either a) were insufficient or b) threw up a red flag, that your nominations fell through somehow, or (the most practical) is your leadership experience. West Point looks for candidates with very well rounded leadership experience, as well as potential. Being the hockey team captain will certainly work in your favor... but community service and developmental projects are what I've seen to be overbearing if you're really seeking a competitive application. Don't let this hold you back. Continue to brush up your testing and community service as well as all other aspects of being a cadet if you really have your heart set on USMA!

Thank you all for the great responces! Here is some more information that was missing. I come from CA. School doesn't give class ranks but when I went to restart the application, all my info was already in and it had a rank in there. IDK if it's accurate since I never put it in there but it said I was in the 15th percentile. GPA weighted is 4.27 and I'm not sure on unweighted. I am doing EMT school this summer to help my application as well as a backup. Also working hard on physical fitness. I hope it helps. On the other hand, I think I am leaning more and more to NWP since it's pretty local and only one semester which will allow me to pursue a police department cadet program or an ROTC program. I'm not sure, I am not dead set yet.
