Hello everybody,
As you can probably see, Im new here, and have many questions!
But first I will introduce myself a little bit, I am a sophomore in high school and have wanted to attend the Naval Academy since I first went there on an elementary school field trip.
Course wise, I am taking:
-Pre-Calculus
-AP History
-Latin 3
-Chemistry
-English 10 (the only one offered to my grade)
-and an Arts class
That being said, I have just locked in my course load for next year which will be:
-AP Calculus
-HL World History (an IB class)
-AP Government
-HL Physics (an IB class)
-German 1 (they are phasing out Latin at my school)
-HL English (an IB class)
I also had a 90th percentile rating in all of my PSAT categories, I know its not the real thing, but I haven't gotten the opportunity to take it yet.
Please let me know if you know anything about the IB courses, Ive heard they are similar to AP though, but have never had a definitive answer as to how the service academies view them.
I do not have many extracurricular activities but they are:
-Varsity Lacrosse (last year and this year)
-School volunteer club (fundraising and community service)
-I was a coach for a youth program a few months ago and am in the process of getting another coaching job for this summer.
-I am also working on getting an internship with my Congressman (Steny Hoyer)
Now down to my main questions,
I have heard that being accepted to the Naval Academy is harder when you are from Maryland (which I am), is this just people talking, or is this true?
My final question is about my class's leadership positions. My school's student government is a joke, which is obviously a problem but I cannot change that. Mostly upcoming seniors are elected through a big popularity contest, Im not saying Im anti-social or anything, I just don't throw the huge house parties that get them popularity (I actually try to avoid them). I am worried about this because most people that I have seen that are accepted are class presidents or VP's, which I will have trouble with, but have been trying to out-weigh with coaching.
I also would like any and all suggestions for other groups or activities I could become apart of.
Thank you for your time and any help is greatly appreciated.
