My portal status just changed from “under review” to “hold”. Is this a good thing?

This is the most common applicant status. As the name suggests, all reviews are complete and you are in a holding pattern waiting for additional action. It is not a negative - every successful applicant has been in HOLD status. Some for only a brief time, and others will linger for months.

Does this mean that if you’re application still says under review, you are not accepted?

no.

Candidate records will go in and out of a review status until which time you either receive a non-select letter or an appointment letter. Under Review is great - it means someone is looking at your application package.

As many people have written before, the admissions process is a marathon, not a sprint. You are still in the running until you are told you are not. In that sense, both "Under Review" and "Hold" are good things. Good for those of you who have completed your applications this early. There is no way to predict how long you will remain on Hold which is very frustrating. Our family has been through this process three times, with Hold times ranging from two weeks to three months. It depends on so many factors including the class composition they want for this year. My prediction is that they are going to be trying to increase the number of women in the class due to current pressure from Congress and MARAD, so male candidates may be on hold longer than female candidates. I know, life's not fair. At this point, you have done all that you can do, and things are out of your hands. Get your plans B and C in order and continue to strive for excellence in all you do. Don't do anything stupid to ruin your chances due to injury or being arrested or suspended. Enjoy your senior year and spend time with family and friends because INDOC will be here before you know it. Good luck to all.

Did you accept other schools by May 1, before you received USMMA appointment?

Yes, I was already committed to a civilian university and even had a housing contract. I was accepted on May 5th and was given a total of three hours to make a decision on my appointment. Called my parents during Calculus and then signed my papers next period in physics. All in all I changed my college decision within an hour and a half. Being on hold doesn't mean that you weren't accepted, but USMMA does some weird things with the allotment of slots per state, so sometimes it takes them a few weeks to a month or so to figure out if they have room on the slate for you.

Hopefully you make it and I get to see you at indoc next year ;)
