Honors Program, AFROTC, or Both?

Joining the military has always been something that has interested me, and I would like to try out AFROTC in college. I plan on going to Purdue University to study engineering next fall. In order to participate in the engineering honors program, you must be located in that dorm, called a "learning community". AFROTC also has a learning community and I feel that I would miss out if I don't participate in that learning community. You can still take honors classes without being a part of the program. Is the "honors" designation worth missing out on AFROTC opportunities? Would it be better to just take the honors classes? Any opinions would be highly appreciated.

You might ask the AFROTC recruiting officer at Purdue this question. I'm sure there are any number of engineering majors in AFROTC there, and some of them have undoubtedly already confronted your situation.

That's a great idea. Thanks for the input!

My kids have always roomed with friends who were non-ROTC and didn't miss anything. I think being part of the Honors Program community might help broaden and diversify your social circle beyond just being with ROTC cadets. Good luck! Congrats on being selected for the Honors program.

ROTC does not have it's own living community where my kid is going to college, but the honors program does, so he is going to live there. They said they do have AROTC and AFROTC students in the honors community so they will try to match up them (ROTC or athletes) up as room mates so they are on a similar schedule. The honors college and their living and learning community is supposed to be great and will expose them to all types of other majors and ideas. They will be spending plenty of time with ROTC already. Good luck!
