How can academics affect you being kicked out in the first semester?

I've been following the message board for months as my son navigated his Doolie spring semester. In the end, he met a hard ARC and was disenrolled for failing a core course (calc) twice. He wants to re-apply and re-enroll and he wants to do so with a commitment and motivation I wish he'd shown for the past four months. I could go on and a ton of questions but I'm just looking for a thread to settle into first. Any help -- especially from current/past ALO's (like Flieger 83) -- would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Just wanted to thank you for sharing. You are not alone and the advice that your query generated was invaluable to the other parents and cadets that find themselves in a similar position. I for one will be quieting praying and publically cheering for your DS over the next couple of years as he works hard to reinstate himself. #nodoubt.nofear

Its funny (not ha ha) on how so many students dont take advantage of resources provided to them or how they dont ask for help. I have to imagine is that some of these students exceled at High School and never needed to ask for help. I have a younger son with learning disablities and went to a school from 5th - 12th grade where they cater do these types of kids. These all are very smart and emotionally stable kids who whatever reason have some sort of processing issue that prevents them from learning like a typical kid. The most important thing they are taught is to self advocate. He is in college now, and he uses all of the resources provided by the school. If he doesnt understand or has an issue, he will see the teacher during office hours. He goes to the writing labs for help when needed and any other lab that school may have. In other words, he takes advantage of everything in order to get good grades because he knows he needs it. My other son who is in the AF who never had a problem with school but also never had great grades, probably never talked to a professor outside of class. I am sure if he had self advocated for himself, he would have done better. We always joke around that it was lucky that the harder worker had the learning problems.

Thanks Velocity2012. Yeah, this has been a truly unfortunate and sad experience. I see you have a '21 "No Doubt, No Fear" cadet, too. Congrats; I know how proud you are 'cause I was there with you. We'll be back -- I can just feel it. As In-The-Know and Flieger '83 both noted, nothing worth having is easy. Today he met with the first of three (so far) academic counselors. Said he needed a transcript before they could really get to work but at least we have three fall enrollment options (two full-up 4-year universities and one community college) to help us get the academics going. Even though this is a multi-year effort, he's going to apply every opportunity allowed by the USAFA instructions -- the soonest being this fall. Thanks for the prayers, thanks for the advocacy, thanks for the parent-to-parent support. My best to your Airman! D-Dad
