How important is Religious affiliation and jobs for admittance to a service academy?

When I went into the Marine Corps you were encouraged by the DI's to either be a Catholic/Protestant or a Jew. Otherwise they found things for you to do during worship time. Now I know this was many years ago, and at a different level, but I have been under the impression that religon is important in the process.

Ahhh, similar backgrounds, I went to many a magic show on PI while in boot camp rather that spit shine boots back in the squad bay too!

On another note, I agree with Zaphod 100%

In terms of admission, no one cares whether you are religious or not. If you are active in religious activities, it can be a plus in the same way that being active in scouting or other community activities is a plus.

I can't speak for today, but in my day there was no pressure to "be religious." If you choose to attend church/mass/synagogue, that's great. Many mids find such services comforting but no one "takes attendance" and if you don't attend, no one will care.

In my day, the chaplains (at least the good ones) would roam the halls to talk to mids, especially plebes. They didn't care if you were of their religion or even were religious. Most of us found their presence very comforting. As an aside, if you do it right, being a chaplain at USNA can be very demanding.

I recall non-denominational prayers at noon meal. Those who wanted to pray did so, others stood respectively and quietly. 30 seconds (or less) of quiet meditation never hurt anyone.

My son who will be a plebe at USMA next year is very active in our church youth group and I am sure the activities - mission trips, leadership roles, etc. helped his application to West Point. I hope he will continue to participate in some type of religious activity, but that is up to him.
.

Yeah that is me. I am very active and i love doing it, especally the mission trips. My mom's hope is that I dont forget about my faith while I am away at school.( no matter where it is)

in basic at USAFA, if you wish, they have groups for EVERYTHING. and the same goes for the ac year. everything from neo-pagan to protestant to catholic to muslim, buddhist, hindu, and EVERYTHING in between. there are TONS of groups that meet on Monday nights during SPIRE time (dont know what the acronym means, but it's something about religion lol) in which nothing else can be scheduled. no one here at USAFA was "condemned" for not going to church. they were given the opportunity to sit down in their rooms (because we werent allowed to sit) and do as they pleased. USAFA really does an outstanding job of offering everything- the chaplains here are amazing at what they do.

but anyways, religion has no bearing on your admittance or not. nor will it help/hurt you here. it's all your choice
