How long?

Hi everyone,

I had a LOE/LOI (im unsure what it was but it pushed my deadline up earlier) from USAFA back in the fall. I received my first nomination around Mid-January and haven’t heard from USAFA since the fall. I am starting to get worried as all my friends from summer seminar have gotten their appointments and most kids that also received a nomination already were appointed as well.

Is this a bad sign? Or, am I just overthinking it and need to be more patient? Thank you.

Do you have an LOA -- a letter of assurance -- that guarantees offer of appointment as long as all conditions are fulfilled? (An LOE is a letter of encouragement to finish the application. It had no binding effect. Haven't heard of an LOI.)

If it's an LOA, sit tight. You'll receive your offer. Don't worry about what others are getting because it has no real bearing on your situation. Everyone's admission process is a bit different. The military's unofficial motto: Hurry up and wait.

While it might feel that everyone else has gotten appointments, only about 40% have been given out. The majority will be given out this month (about 50% of total number).

My ds is sitting where you are. LOI given in October, nomination in December, and he is waiting. My oldest did not get appointed until March 17th his cycle and we are pretty confident that he won his slate.

I know it is hard to wait, but appointments are coming.

You aren't alone. A LOE means Letter of Encouragement. People also use LOI which means Letter of Interest. Everyone says they just want to encourage you to finish the application process. Some people were lucky to get a LOA which is a Letter of Assurance which means that you will receive an appointment IF you get a nomination, pass the medical, and everything else in your application is qualifying to receive the appointment.

I received a LOE/LOI on October 5th. Qualified on medical. Received 2 nominations in December. Have check marks on everything. Many but not all of my friends I made at Summer Seminar have received appointments already but I have not. I am hoping I receive one and soon! So unfortunately we just have to wait and hope!

No, I know LOA’s state that it is a guaranteed offer of appointment. Thank you though!

Our DS is a second-year applicant attending one of the five self-prep junior colleges this year. He's doing very well in the SAP (Service Academy program) and holds all A's in his STEM classes, which are incredibly hard. I'm not exaggerating when I say that he studies 20 hours a week in chemistry alone to keep an A in the class. Although we feel he is an excellent candidate, he has never received an LOE or LOI, which makes me worry that he is not on their radar. Is it common for cadets who don't receive those to get in still?

We're trying to stay optimistic about it as we wait, but going so long without any news is nerve-racking.

I believe the LOIs were sent out in waves, meaning if your application was complete by a certain time you would not have receieved one regardless of your competitiveness. For example, I received an LOI mid-October and have not received an appointment. Someone I know had their application finished by that time and did not receive an LOI, yet was one of the very first people appointed in the entire nation. No LOI is no reason to worry at all!

Thank you, @agmp183, for the reassurance. I think we'll all be so relieved when the waiting ends. :)

My ds's application was complete when he got his LOI so I'm not sure how accurate your statement is. However, we don't know howany LOIs we're sent out nor how much they factor into admissions so I would definitely not worry about not getting one. There are still soany appointments to go out.

@99Gold Thank you for your critique. I think overall nobody really knows the value of LOIs apart from admissions. I would not worry if you didn't get one and an appointment is certainly not guaranteed if you did.

Hello, be patient. Appointments go out between October and June. Hopefully you will not wait that long.

I'm in the same boat. A lot of hurry up and wait.
