How Many People Go From A Prep School to A Service Academy In Each Class?

During my senatorial interview, a West Point graduate who is currently in the Army told me that about 60% of the class that goes to West Point attend the preparatory school. Is this true and is it the same for other service academies? This is just information I wish to know because I went to the candidate visitor weekend at USNA and the three midshipmen that I stayed with said many went to the preparatory school first. I am praying I get a chance to attend to either attend NAPS, receive the vice presidential/ superintendent nomination to the Naval Academy (my #1 choice and what I'm hoping will happen so I can have a chance of appointment), or receive an appointment to USAFA. I was only able to receive a nomination to USAFA by my congressman. This question is more so because I'm curious.

No way does 60% of a class attend prep school. That would be 700 students. For USNA, it’s about 25%. Additional appointees are self prep or have attended college, making up about 1/3 of each entering class. It may be higher for WP but I’d be shocked if 60%. The grad might have meant 60%of recruited athletes . . .

Perhaps 60% of prep class go on to SAs? Grads are still competing against the pool of applicants.

Maybe, I just thought it was odd to say that 60% went to the prep school. Maybe he was trying to freak me out during my interview.

I wouldn’t think about this too much TomB. It’s definitely not 60%. Rather close to 25% from what I know for USMA. USNA1985 explanation looks right on. You can find your answer on some of the Academies websites. If you feel that you fit in the PREP pool then it’s good news for you. 25% of the class is still large. But from what I know many or most are from prior enlisted service and remaining mostly recruited Athletes who didn’t have strong academic records, especially test scores. Most enlisted come through Prep to get them re-oiled for demanding academics in the Plebe year.

Good luck with Air Force and USNA Appointments!

I kind of was guessing that enlisted and other recruited athletes get to go to the prep school. I have 4 and a half years of boxing experience but it stinks that service academies don't recruit for boxing (or at least USNA doesn't as far as I'm aware).

Boxing experience will validate you out of PE at USNA, however. That's better than a kick in the teeth, anyway.

It's not possible for 60% to come from USMAPS. The USMAPS class size is only about 250 - about 20% of the incoming USMA class if all end up attending.

He may have meant that about 60% do not attend directly out of high school. Many go to USMA after USMAPS, civilian college, or civilian prep.

Not to be rude but he may have just pulled it out of his butt. In other words, to him it seemed like a lot because maybe he knew a lot of them and just came up with a percentage
