How the Navy’s top commander botched the highest-profile investigation in years

CNO was between a rock and hard place. He knew he had to come out hard against what happened in order to lead the Navy and prevent future incidents, but I'm sure his JAG's were telling him to keep his mouth shut on the topic. I am a lawyer, but I often tell clients that you have to listen to what your lawyers are saying , but sometimes you have to ignore legal advice if you want to run a successful business. If that is what happened here, I can't fault the CNO.

The 1st Marine Division CG was in a similar situation two or three years ago. The situation was hazing and the general came down hard on battalion commanders and put the word out that those found to be hazing would be dealt with harshly and bounced from the Corps.

The accused appeared at office hours and courts martial. The defense for some was the claim of undue command influence. Military Times put out a few articles making the CG look like a tyrant. There was speculation that his career may be damaged. Time moved on though and several Marines were awarded punishments ranging from restriction to the brig to discharge. The general survived the scrutiny and is now the III MEF CG.
