How to take approved items to I-Day

As there are some items that are approved for Plebe Summer (retainer, calculator, compression shorts, etc.), how do they keep them in their possession? Looking at past PS videos, the P2B appear to be separated from their backpacks early on in the process. I know phones and chargers need to be in marked zip lock bags. What about the rest?

Baggy like things together. They’ll get the backpacks back briefly. There will be 3-4 plebes in a room madly dealing with piles of issued stuff, stowing things, and being able to immediately find what they are looking for in a few minutes is helpful.

mine took a small backpack with her stuff in it - carried all paperwork in her hand in a folder - dont put that in back pack - they do get back pack back and can their stuff out of it -

The Detailers form a line and toss the bags (often small backpacks) into a truck outside Alumni Hall and they drive them around to the circle by the submarine monument (By 2nd Wing) and they take them up the steps into Bancroft.

It's a lot of work for them. Make it easy. Bring everything in a very small bag. I saw one once that was just a gallon ZipLoc bag with a phone, charger, and a 3"x5" note card with the Plebe's name and Company number. That was a Plebe who knew what they were doing.

Then there were the duffle bags. Don't be the Plebe who shows up with a duffle bag full of stuff.

Show up with your PTR, your labeled phone and charger in a zip lock and your wallet-labeled. The illustrious USNA will provide the rest.

Wear sensible clothing as you will be in it for awhile until whiteworks are issued. Civvies will be stowed until PPW when they need to be given to parents. My DS was going to toss them until I said no!

Also have on your broken in runners/sneakers/trainers/gym shoes.

DW put together a binder with all DS paperwork in sleeves. While was a good idea, in practice it would have been easier to have paperwork in large envelope to sort through. Also DS had all his belongings in a small bag.

Don't be "box boy"---do a search to see pictures.

You can bring a backpack, you will get briefly separated with it once you start in processing, then it will magically appear in a large pile in your company area along with everyone else in your company.
Due to reasons I am not entirely sure of, detailers cannot open your backpack. They will allow you to open it in front of them and take anything that you will need for the summer (ie extra compression shorts, toiletries, etc,) and you leave everything else in your backpack. then the bag goes into a room only your detailers have access to. Detailers are human, if you need something, they will help you get it. They care about you, after all you will be joining their company after the summer.

If you like Grey not a problem. Put it in a bag and they boil it (I think) It is the least of their problems Plebe Summer:)

Then again, who needs underwear. Like thousands of years without.,:thumb:

Your local parents groups and others will post on here recommendations on what to bring. You can show up with nothing and be just fine. More socks, underwear, and compression shorts make life easier. Laundry happens like twice a week during PS. You can ship more. The PTR usually has a list of mandatory and recommended items. Old threads here have them also. A backpack with the cell phone, extra socks, underwear, compression shorts, paperwork, wallet, glasses and contacts is probably enough. Wear broken in running shoes, shorts, polo tucked in. Be comfortable. You leave Alumni Hall in uniform if they return to pre-COVID in processing. And no, they sweat all day. They get plenty of opportunities to shower and change; after PEP each morning, after sports period and before bed. You just get used to be sweaty and wet all day. It’s part of life… remember Bancroft didn’t have A/C until 15-ish years ago. USNA has done this for a long time… they will all be fine.

Ok he can go with a full rucksack full of compression underwear and socks. Enough so that he doesn't need to send out any stinkin' (literally!) laundry. I'm sure the detailers will appreciate his thinking ahead.

Just to be clear - that's a joke. :)

He plays lacrosse, I can definitely understand the smell! Old lacrosse gloves when the get sweaty...ugh. They travel in the bed of the pickup.

If you only knew how bad Plebes smell. It’s unforgettable even decades later. A gaggle of Plebes is the worst smell ever.
It's like the first time you smell a body decomposing. Once you smell that, you know exactly what it is the next time around.

When a group of them pass by in their whiteworks, the stench forms a cloud. It is truly something you will never forget.

I get used to the smell since playing hockey, especially at locker room.
It is exponentially worse. You do get to shower multiple times per day, but the quantity does not equal quality. You’ll have wet sweaty clothes quite literally rotting in your closet, it gets boiled then sent back and worn within a day or two. Over PS, you a literally never dry, and it is nasty… but no plebe cares about that, we are just worried about when the next meal is… or that you literally always have to pee.

It’s also, 1200 hormonal 17-19 year olds (some a few older) under incredible stress. They also all are eating the same thing, using the same shampoo and soap (not sharing it, but issued the same), and low grade non-smelling laundry detergent. So it just permeates everywhere. There is no other smell like it.
