How to take approved items to I-Day

Speaking of laundry, these Scenic Sunday postings on the official Naval Academyinstagram are fantastic!! Bancroft basement. Bancroft attic. Chapel dome. Galley. Worth a peek!

Here is one of my personal fav’s: laundry

You put the bag you bring to I-Day into the bed of a truck, and get to open it up to grab your belongings once you finish in-processing and arrive at your company area. Personally, I really would not worry if it is not super minimalist because you’ll want to have everything you need in case your parents are not visiting you during that weekend and it’s not like you will have to carry it around all day, but obviously don’t make it too heavy for the detailers to carry. You won’t get yelled at for the appearance of your bag because the first thing you do outside of alumni is write your name on a piece of duct tape and attach it to the bag before dropping it off, and no one really starts yelling at you until you get inside.

They give them back to you on plebe parent’s weekend, but also let you grab any extra things you might need later for sports period once that starts up.

Do people bring their own laptops? I know they are issued specific ones with all the appropriate IT certificates to use on the USNA systems, but not sure if Plebes are allowed to have their own as well?

Nothing on I-Day, of course.

I think most plebes find the issued laptop fine for academics. Many supplement with an iPad or tablet for note-taking.

Eventually, many do have their own laptops with them, but typically plebes are far too busy, exhausted and over-tasked to even think about that until they come up for air some way into the year. You also have 3-4 plebes and all their stuff in a room.

Your plebe will figure it out and let you know when and if.

I know this is an old thread, but hoping that someone may answer. I was doing a search on compression shorts and see that socks are also recommended. Can anyone advise as to what type of socks? Crew? I assume white? TIA

No socks needed. For real. Both my boys actually loved the ones provided. And they are plentiful. Maybe down the road you may want some? But for sure not plebe summer. You will have enough that are required uniform socks.

Where is that photo that gets posted every year of the mountain of issued stuff spread out on the deck? I thought I had bookmarked it, but apparently I had a user malfunction. Forum regulars know the one I am talking about.

For real, indeed! DD had an early report time. She got to her room well ahead of her roommates. She had plenty of time before the next activity. How did she spend the time, I asked later.

“I folded socks and put them away.”

Oh. What about after that?

“I folded more socks and put them away.”

Yes, I get it. And after that?

“I folded the rest of the socks and put them away.”

😮🤔🙄

As there are some items that are approved for Plebe Summer (retainer, calculator, compression shorts, etc.), how do they keep them in their possession? Looking at past PS videos, the P2B appear to be separated from their backpacks early on in the process. I know phones and chargersT need to be in marked zip lock bags. What about(O the rest?

Follow PTR instructions.
Take two sets... One for Mid, one for parents.
DS (CL 2026) took one back pack and one binder. Report time was 0630. To get in the building, he showed the PTR.

So have the PTR ready as you walk towards Alumni Hall. DS wore a nice khaki shorts, buttoned shirt, and his favorite running shoes. Most of the stuff in the bag he did not use. And we took it home during PPW.

Double check, triple check the night before. Alarm set. Lay out clothes to wear. Unforseen events like a 2-hour traffic jam and long lines of people ---->> include it in your Iday time schedule. It's not pleasant to be late for the Mid and parents.

My son likes their socks too.

Dang - to this day the only thing I know about my son’s experience before induction after reporting early was the two sentences he whispered to me after induction.

“I think I made a mistake. They were mean to me today (the polite version) and I hadn’t been inducted yet.”

Thank you so much for your response!

Yay, thank you @justdoit19 . I also found this link to an article about all the work behind the scenes to prep for 1100-1200 iterations of issued items list. As an operational logistician, I appreciate that.

That’s a really great website for the inner workings of USNA. Great articles!! Dig back into the blogs, and get lost.

DYK that the Lucky Bag is the biggest publish yearbook in the world? Or how the Brigade is fed? The different shops and their history? Or Brigade laundry??

Get lost, here. Fascinating reads from uniform, to pranks, to distinguished grads, and other fascinating tidbits….

Thank you so much for your response!

LITERALLY, all both of my guys took and needed was their paperwork, phone and charger labeled in a baggie, wallet (including ID), little bit of cash, extra compressions (and bras I have read for women….I only had boys), and wore their broken in tennis shoes. All in a daypack.

That’s it. No toothbrush. Comb. Razor. That all. Everything else is provided. I know there is a list of clothes (hence the sock question), but I believe that’s what they are ISSUED when there. Not a packing list. It always seems confusing every year.

If they have a suitcase with extra stuff? It gets tossed into a pile by grumpy, hot detailers, until PPW. And your plebe will have to deal with a bunch of stuff they don’t need at the end. Adding it to the piles and piles of stuff they are going to have to haul when moving rooms up and down flights of starts in the super hot and humid conditions…in stifling polyester uniforms.

Don’t send extra stuff. Your plebe will thank you. Anything they do request, you can bro g or purchase PPW. Hitting up Target is one of the highlights of that weekend 🎯

Que the USAFA box boy photo 😁

Thank you. Yes, I do not want to bring anything extra if I don't' need it. I am planning on bringing extra compression shorts because I do have bigger thighs and I know I'll be thankful to have extra. Besides that, my phone, wallet and retainer, and of course the paperwork is all that I was hoping to only bring with me and the running shoes on my feet.
