I-Day questions

Hi, I'm currently a high school senior and I received/sent in my appointment a little over a month ago. After the initial excitement has died down, I've found myself with a few questions regarding what we'll be allowed to bring/keep on I-Day and throughout plebe summer.

I'll be participating in a varsity sport (rifle), and I was wondering how much of my own personal gear I'll be allowed for practices.

Do I need to bring my own running shoes? If so, how many pairs do I need?

Should I bring my cell phone with me or have my parents send it to me later? How much later?

Am I allowed to have my iPod, or is that totally out of the question? What if I use it for my sport?

Should I bring any clothes at all?

Will I be allowed to keep my retainer?

Are they going to take away the clothes I'm wearing when I report in on I-Day?

In short, what are they going to take, what are they going to let us keep, and what will they issue us?

Thanks!

1. Bring your own running shoes. Your permit to report packet will have a packing list. Also take a look at old threads from the past few years. Tons of info on what is suggested to bring. One pair is all you need for the summer.

2. Bring whatever personal practice gear you will need. Sounds like you are recruited so you know the coaches. Ask them if you should bring your rifle gear before Plebe Summer or have your parents bring it after. If its before Plebe Summer he will probably arrange for you to drop it off the day before Plebe Summer. That is what most sports teams do so you don't have to haul around your extra gear on I Day.

3. Bring your cell phone. Bring a charger and put them in a ziploc bag on I day. They will take them from you but you can use them for your few phone calls home. Label the bag with your name just to be safe.

4. Don't bring your iPod for plebe summer. I would either have your parents bring it after plebe summer and leave it in your team locker room or drop it off with the rest of the gear before I Day.

5. Follow the instructions in the packet on what to bring clothes wise. Its very minimal. Only civilian clothes you will need is what you wear in.

6. Yes you can keep your retainer. Bring it, label the case.

7. They will let you keep some of the extra stuff you bring such as compression shorts, extra socks, extra white t shirts etc. They will take the rest of it and lock it in a room during Plebe Summer. They will return it Parents Weekend and you can send back what you don't need with your parents.

Don't bring much on Iday. Just follow the list. You could really show up with nothing on Iday and be fine. They will issue everything from socks and underwear to toiletries, cleaning supplies, sheets, towels, stamps, etc. Take a look at old threads and see what folks recommend to add to the list, not bring from the list or have your parents ship you.

Does anyone have the link to the Permit to Report packet from last year? I know I have seen someone post it before...I think this would be beneficial to the OP...a lot of these questions are normally found in there and it is something to go by until this year's is sent out.

I remember reading something about mostly white running shoes. Is that outdated or still a requirement?

That is outdated. Below is the statement on Running Shoes from Info Pack link above.

NOTE 1 (RUNNING SHOES): All candidates will be issued running shoes on I-Day; however, candidates are highly encouraged to bring their own “broken-in” running shoes. Candidates will be authorized to wear these running shoes during physical training evolutions in order to cut down on medical injuries such as shin splints and blisters. Recommend consulting an athletic store that specializes in running to advise you on what running shoe is best for your foot type.

Yes. Bring their wallets and ID. They have lockers with locks that can be secured for personal items like this. Probably won't use them until they go to the baseball game.

For the most part they take away your watches Plebe Summer. Use the search function for watches and you will see a million threads for this topic in all the SA forums. You can't go wrong with a durable, plain, water proof watch that you can use in the pool, working out, etc. I am a watch geek so I always wore a nice watch in uniform for class and had a workout watch.

Bring running shoes, broken in and any color.
Bring cell phone and charger. It will be put away until you are permitted to make your phone calls. Last summer we made short calls on Sundays 2 weeks and 4 weeks into Plebe Summer.
Communicate with your coaches about equipment for rifle prior to IDay but you should be OK.
We did not rate watches or IPods all summer. On parents weekend I was briefly reunited with my watch and then again at the start of Academic year. You may be able to keep an IPod in your locker wherever the rifle team room is but generally, plebes don't rate it-but you'll find a lot of stuff is company dependent.
As for clothes, other than the clothes on my back, I brought some extra compression shorts. They issue them but if you have a specific brand you like then bring your own. I think females are permitted to bring their own bra's.
Yes, bring a wallet with ID and some money. I also had my debit card.
Once I got the lay of the land and knew what my company would permit, I was able to request specific things for my parents to send.
You are seriously better off travelling light and flying under the radar through Plebe summer.

DS plans to try out for football. Coaches have not responded to emails he sent a while back about his interest in the program. Appreciate any advice on how he goes about bringing and securing his cleats and any other gear he should bring.

DS did a walk on for varsity sport--brought necessary equipment and was allowed to keep it for tryouts. Bring what you need and nothing more.
