If my family leaves Germany, could I stay behind if I have a job?

Hello Everyone,

So I don't know if this is the correct place to ask this, but I am trying to get more information, and hopefully one of you could clarify this for me.

My dad is working as a contractor in the reserves here in Garmisch Germany and I am his dependent. My family has been here for the past five years, but our time is going to be up next November. Currently, my family is trying to get one last extension for a year which would let them live here until 2022. At the moment, I am 18, have graduated high school, and am taking a GAP year until college in August. I will be applying to work at the childcare center for work on base to keep me busy this next year, however, I also ended up meeting my girlfriend of 3 months and everything has changed. I am considering doing online school if possible while working here so I can stay with her.

My question is, if my family were to leave Germany and be stationed somewhere else, but I had a job working at the CDC, could I choose to stay here for a little longer instead? For reference, one of my friends is 21 and his dad is on active duty. His family will be retiring soon (not in Garmisch), however, my friend (who happens to work at the childcare center CDC) has his own place off base and will be staying here for a few years even after his family leaves.

It seems like an odd question, but with everything happening in the states right now, I would much rather do online university classes while working here even if my family was gone so I could spend more time with my girlfriend and not worry about moving. So, does anyone know what the restrictions/rules would be on this and or who I should ask on base about weather or not I could stay here once I started working on base?

Do what you want to do, I say.

Last time I checked, being 18 years old made you an adult.

Of course, living apart from your parents household, not being a full time college student & being self-supporting might limit their ability to claim you as a dependent on their US Form 1040 for 2021. Minor issue.

My suggestion? Forget the child care job & the girlfriend & Germany & online college. Come home to the States & enlist as in the US Marine Corps, requesting MOS 0300 (they'll gladly grant your wish). Ooh-rah. Semper Fi. Tun Tavern. Devil Dogs. The whole 9 yards.

Do in-person college in 4 years when things are normal again.
